i had posted digital shots of these "oilgraphs" on facebook but now they are dry enough to scan and post here...
they are lith prints, glued with archival glue to wood, then covered in oil paints of various colors. once that is done, i begin removing the paint with various things..paper towel, news paper, etc..until i am happy with the look, or until i give up....
thanks thomas...it gives me something to do when i am unable to print. plus, it is just damn fun to do! frustrating at times, yes, but when the gods are with me, it is very satisfying...
These are awesome! What kind of oil paints did you use? And full strength? Or diluted to a certain runny consistency? I am very intrigued. Do you think the soft highlights of lith prints lend benefits to this technique you're having fun at? Wish I could see you do this. Video.. Youtube.. ? Thanks for sharing these!
hi perry...i used regular full strength oil paints (windsor newton) and have found that diluting them with medium is not the best way to go.. i apply the colors (trying to stick with no more than 3) over the entire photo then usually cover everything with a solid covering of burnt sienna, umber or even black...after that i begin removing the oils, as i said, with paper towel bunched up, news paper...sometimes dipping the tip into odorless mineral spirits if i need to remove alot...i know the photo pretty well so i know where i want to remove more and less etc.. supposedly, the more contrasty the print, the better the "oilgraph", at least that is what the man who has inpsired me to do this has said...however, none of my images are high contrast and it is working pretty well..i have a few total rejects and some that i have wiped all the paint off of and have redone or will redo eventually...i will include a link here to a youtube video of kevin rolly doing HIS work...he does it often as a performance art kinda thing and although the videos are time lapsed, you will get the idea...i will also give you a link to his website. HE is the master and the one who has inspired me and helped me with advice and encouragement...
thanks for your comments and interest perry...
