My Boys, Three Snags, 2008

An image I took on the first day of 2008...and hopefully will be part of my on-going series of my boys in the landscape. It is just a negative scan, but I think the platinum/palladium print I hope to make from it will look about like this.

Ilford FP4+, developed in Jobo drum, Ilford Universal PQ Developer, 1:19, 68F for 5 minutes.

I have another neg of the same scene (except the boy on the right has moved down) to develop...might increase the development slightly (the neg was given 1 stop more exposure...2 minutes...also).
Location
Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, California

No problem, Jim. Just let me know when you are ready to head this way. Personally I feel the summer is the most difficult time to photograph in the Redwoods-- too sunny and windy. The forest open up quite a bit once the alders and berries drop their leaves.

Late October until the leaves start to reappear works the best for me. The forests south of Eureka (Avenue of the Giants) are quite different than the forests I usually go to north of Eureka (Redwood National Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods, etc). For one thing, there is a lot of poison oak to the south one has to watch out for! But both can provide some great images.

Vaughn, i will certainly let you know when i plan a trip your way The last time through was with the family and no time for serious work. I saw some amazing areas and from September on is my shooting season. I think it was on The Avenue of the Giants that I went crazy with what I saw.

Jim

The second and third images (L-R) on your link are absolutely lights out. In particular, the second shot, which is stunning.

George

Thanks, George. I find those two to be important images for me.

Jim, too bad your son did not pick Humboldt State -- then you would have the excuse to head up here more often! I manage the teaching darkroom of the Art Dept at HSU. I am one of those college students who came to Humboldt (from SoCal) for college and never left...its been 35 years!

Vaughn

I too usually go north of Eureka. It does not get a lot better. This shot is great. Getting your boys to sit still for that long. Priceless.
