Who needs film?
Ilya, I should explain: That's not us in the
photograph. Melanie photographed Mark
Sink and his partner, Kristen Hatgi, in this
plate. I agree, that unusual media -- wet
plate, Polaroid, Holgas -- have a way of
commanding attention apart from their
content, and that is why both of us have
largely resisted exploring them. But I
think Melanie will be giving collodion more
attention, between the bottles and diaper
changes.

What a great picture. One can invent lots of stories to go with it, but mine is the evil local banker come to foreclose on the poor widow's farm.

Dear Sanders,

this photograph feels and looks too intimate for it to be just a portrait of two people , this truly has a movie sort of a mood , so my hat is off to Melanie for creating something so personal , Kristen's stair which takes you out of this world into somewhere beyond reality is something that every director and every photographer wishes for!!!!

You got to tell more,

Is there a story behind this?

If not, this image sure makes you feel like there should be ...and this is the best compliment I can offer Melanie.

Melanie is the real talent in the family.

Melanie has this fantastic ability to intuit people,
and their relationships. She spent an afternoon with
Mark and Kristen as a model for them. At the end of
the shoot, she asked if she could photograph them
with Mark's camera. This is what she made, on the
fly, with a strange camera and a strange medium
-- a single unplanned and untutored exposure.

But then, I've also seen her sit down at a piano and
play music -- all completely improvised, and having
never taken a lesson in piano-playing, composing and
playing out of her imagination.

yes, I know those moments when things line up, right moment , right light

Minor White spoke of these moments when all things stop ...only you , your breath and your heart beat ...
