meat market

I photgraphed this in the dimly lit and crowded meat market of Xique-Xique. Set inside a warehouse type of building, the meat market has many different butchers behind their respective counters, much like a farmer's market, or street market.

This was one of the butchers that allowed me to photograph. His counter was the first one in the door, and that was the only reason I could get enough light to shoot (and even then I underexposed the frames).

This print was bleached with dilluted iodine and a paintbrush to bring out the butcher.

Please let me know what you think.

HI,

I like your work, but find this one too dark. It makes the viewer work that bit too hard to see whats in it. Could you get a more 'open' print from the neg, or is the underexposure not allowing that? Tough to photograph, tough to print....

Tom

I like the darkness, captures the feel well of the place and job.

Yeah, this is as much as I could get out of this negative. In a way, I wish I could have a 1/2 stop more light on it... that would probably put right where I needed it.

Thank you both for your comments.

Ever try toning the negative to intensify it? Might help some here. Another way is bleach and redevelop with a staining developer.

I like this one a lot. Seeing into the lives of a culture that is different from my own is a wonderful thing.

Agreed it's a little dark, but I find the light bits at the top of the frame a little distracting, and I think if you crop them out the darkness may bother you less. I love his gesture, and the silhouetted arm, and the space between his arm and torso really complete the photo nicely. Very well done.

Hi Andre

you managed it in a great way considering you equipmnet and conditions. I think you can do much more with 1,4 50 mm lens for 6x6 or 1,4 35 mm lens for 35mm and with 400 film. What you achive with biger film format you are loosing with this full open biometar lens and too long time for Pentocon. But again - your scene, composition, atmosphere and humanity chatching is wonderfull.

i agree with Arigram, For me the print is not too dark but show how the light "writes" on the negative and reveal the atmosphere of the shoot, good portrait Andre !

It's perfect. Don't mess with it. You have a very distinctive style. I can immediately spot your work as I browse though these pages. I've been to Brazil many times, not as a tourist but to work, spending 2 to 3 months at a time in Santa Cruz do Sul,RGS. Every one of your images evokes the warmth and integrity of the Brazilian spirit, and honestly, I am quiet jealous of your ability to capture this in you photographs. Don't get bogged down in the technicalities of lenses, chemistry etc., etc. I see so may other posting that are technicaly perfect - perfect exposure, perfect printing, perfect resolution - but evoke no feeling whatsoever. Can't wait to see more of your work. Regards, Declan
