Another from a few rolls of film recently spent on a very rare freeze-up of a lake in a national park near my city.
No wind and snow meant the waters of Clear Lake froze to a mirror-like finish, fantastically smooth and crystal clear. I could see fish swimming 10 feet or more beneath my feet and the glass-like ice reflected the skies above...wondrous.
Never seen anything like you describe, and trying to imagine it from your images. How thick is the ice? Can you walk out on it to see the fish? Beautiful photographs.
Hi Ken - I've never seen anything like it either, although locals tell me it happens every 10-12 years. The ice was about 7-8 inches thick where I was, about 100' from shore, according to an ice fisherman nearby. People were skating around and having a great time - it was quite an experience to see, with the ice being solid and smooth as glass. The ice was not only smooth but was very clear too, from there being almost no wind during the freeze up...it's fairly clear water anytime, anyway.I was pretty freaked out walking around, since it was so clear you had the impression it was very thin. But through the cracks you could see it frozen to a very safe thickness...once you wrapped your mind around it, it was a bit like walking on water, actually. I imagine on skates it would have felt like flying.
