Hanging Tree

4x5 silver contact print

I was looking to make a new Special Edition print, which I offer for $50, when I discovered this negative I made in May of 2006 but had never gotten around to printing... The scan doesn't quite represent the nice gray tones of the print but it's the best digital representation I could muster... see my website for more info.

Yeah, I know, Roots and Rocks.... but it seemed to me that something graceful yet powerful was happening here and was more about life than just the straight subject matter.

Great print, Shawn. I love the amount of contrast and I believe seeing the real print would still be a revelation. Very impressive!

funny thing I was taking a workshop from micheal and paul over in bucks county,pa and I have a tree picture on my wall that is from a cliff with its roots like this. I made mine more dark to give it a more dramatic look.

Thanks fellows! I'm hoping to sell a couple of these while I'm out traveling later this week... a little extra gas money would be great. Best. Shawn

I know this isn't the critique gallery, but I can't help myself. It is a beautiful image, that for me becomes so much stronger by cropping 3/4 or even more of that black space on the top!

I'm sorry I intruded! I shall go back into my cave...

Vaughn

Vaughn,
I remember playing with the composition you suggest on the ground glass and came quite close to making the picture as such. In the end I decided I preferred the addition of a darker triangle in that corner to better balance the weight of the trunk as I believe it does in conjunction with the darker strips farther down the right side and the exit of the roots at the bottom. I also felt that the big triangle at the bottom left became too dominant without the impact of the dark tones along the top. I think it's interesting that we struggled with the same aspect of the photograph and naturally came to different conclusions... I certainly appreciate the thoughts and time spent considering my picture. You had me reevaluating it for quite a while before I mounted it this morning, a very good thing.

I also found it quite interesting to compare my image to the one Mike mentioned:

It's fascinating to see how another photographer approached very similar subject matter and the different decisions made both compositionally and in the darkroom. Great picture by the way, Mike.

Hi Shawn! It is your photograph and I respect your interpretation of the scene -- and I appreciate the consideration and open-mindfulness you gave my comment. But in the end it is your image and it is all about how you responded to what was in front of your camera and while working with the image.

I am, of course, still "right", so I will just have to enjoy and appreciate your great way of seeing...being right all the time is such a burden, but I'll handle it somehow (wink)...

Vaughn

Burden indeed... LOL! Truly appreciate it, Vaughn. BTW, just noticed your signature - funny and all too true.
