A colony of gannet birds sleeps under the stars at Cape St. Mary's, Newfoundland. A rare night when there was a combination of clear skies, no moon, shelter from the pounding coastal winds, and the Milky Way in the right spot!
Thanks every one - I should say this image (and the vertical version which I much prefer) would never have happened without the knowledge of my good friends in St. John's Newfoundland. As most photographers know, tripping the shutter is only a small part of making a picture.
Dave Howells helped make this happen for me and he also gave me valuable advice on technical matters (including focusing using Live View). The ISO was chosen to record detail (on a good modern full frame camera it's terrific) as well as a shutter speed of 25-30 seconds or less...more than that you get stars starting to streak as they move across the sky.
A wide aperture is not a real problem as most things are far away so depth of field isn't an issue.
Thanks again for the kind words. To answer a few of these queries, I'm not interested in selling a digital copy of this image - I'm looking to print this large and print it perfectly.
