Thanks fellas. Patrick, I'm considering cropping options, and hope to be able to get into the darkroom soon. Thanks for the feedback, but why would you do that cropping? How would it improve the print? I'd like to know your thoughts. Tony - Thanks! Ilya - I like really black black, as you know, so it's likely there will be some daaaarrrkkkkkness involved...
Thomas, I think if you cropped it at the edges of the small wall on both sides eliminating the visual heaviness of the sides you would be left with a higher key print with luminous tones visually anchored by the heavy tones of the top. It would be a natural place to crop for your eyes to be led by the various arrows through the image. Cropping these areas would also place emphasis on the spiral motion of the pavement in the background which leads the eye in the direction of the central arrow and out of the image to the right. That is how I would crop it but I tend towards minimalism. I actually see 5 ways to crop it off the top of my head and they would all work. The only thing that bothers me in the straight scan is the left side from the change in tone of the wall over. Cropping it square by eliminating that space would be another way. That would also center the leading arrow giving you some symmetry from top to bottom that is upset in the middle. At any rate I think it is a fascinating image. I would love to see the print.
