I don't know how you do this but you keep making me appreciate the male figure as an object of beauty. Definitely you've got the right stuff, man.

There is something beautifully relaxing about the way you have photographed that fine specimen of a male physique, even with the slight contorted pose.
Maybe it is the no-shadows lighting, maybe it is the smooth skin, or just the unseen general feeling...

John- this wasn't a "portrait". It's a torso. That said, any photo where you crop the face in some way is always problematic. I don't know if I'm entirely happy with this composition in regards to the facial crop, so it's something I'll have to keep working on. I think I might pose it differently, and have the head turned the opposite direction. It looked ok on the ground glass at the time, but that's not always a reliable gauge.

Scott.. something else to consider if you decide to rework this, is the negative space you create on either side of the torso. I quite like this, but it seems to lack a certain tension in the framing that I think it might benefit from. For example, the shoulder on the right hand side of the picture (the model's left side) might work better if it's just a tad closer to the edge of the frame. Create a narrow negative space there... and make a more interesting shape above the shoulder and under the chin, then the figure might have more impact.

My uneducatded view is that the chin is problematic. If the composition had ended at the lower neck the demand to see the remainder of the face would be less. Also I find the stool distracting (or is it his feet?). Anyway, it would seem to me the pose which is PERFECT in my opinion...would benefit from a more square format, with the arm mimicking the format, and the upper edge running through the lower neck and the bottom edge running at just below the hip line. It would make more for a "torso" shot too. I know that is not what you had in mind, I just want to refelct my view that the pose is great...not sure about the format (scroll it on screen and see if you agree). Rgds, K
