My Boys, Three Snags, 2008

An image I took on the first day of 2008...and hopefully will be part of my on-going series of my boys in the landscape. It is just a negative scan, but I think the platinum/palladium print I hope to make from it will look about like this.

Ilford FP4+, developed in Jobo drum, Ilford Universal PQ Developer, 1:19, 68F for 5 minutes.

I have another neg of the same scene (except the boy on the right has moved down) to develop...might increase the development slightly (the neg was given 1 stop more exposure...2 minutes...also).

f45 for 1 minute, a long time for 3 boys.

for me there ist to much gray, i like more the blacks and whites.
but it looks very okay for the whole composition.

My boys are getting pretty use to holding still -- they have been sitting for 30 sec to 2 minute exposures for the past 4 years or so. They are good for a couple exposures before it gets too boring for them. I try to find interesting places for theme to pose. I tried to talk them into getting on the hortizontal log above the boy on the right's head, but they were not very enthusiastic about the idea.

My printing skills are much better than my PhotoShop skills...we'll see what I can do about the range of tones in the final print. It is a good-looking negative.

This is amazing. I don't care about the scan, it's just wonderful to see your children in an environment like this, learning to appreciate the phenomenon that this forest is.
It's a great photograph that you will likely cherish along with all the other ones you made.

Really awesome!

Wonderful image, with superb tonality and very effective composition. The scale of trees to boys is pretty amazing, and shows up to very good advantage.

Vaughn, I really have to get back up to your area again. Last time was to check out Humboldt State with my youngest son. The forest is amazing. He is at UC Santa Cruz and I think I'll photograph in the Redwoods on campus when I take him back on Monday. Love the images with the kids in them.

Thanks for the comments. It has been a fun project. This particular spot has always been a favorite of mine. I photographed these 3 snags in the early 1980's with a 4x5 and made a good 16x20 silver gelatin print of it. I "lost" these snags for a decade or so after the trail was re-routed away from their base. I rediscovered them when I was hauling a borrowed 11x14 up the creek...I looked up and saw the snags. I try to bring the boys to this spot every New Years Day to check out the salmon spawning in the creek (which is directly behind the camera).

For those interested here are 3 more images from of this project:
