Portrait of Daniel Lin

A full-plate ruby ambrotype of Daniel Lin taken at the 2nd Annual Northern Michigan photographer's gathering at Bill Schwab's place last weekend. I am trading Daniel this plate for one of his wonderful prints shown at the get-together. There was a lot of great work there and it was especially difficult to choose an image to swap from Daniel's great portfolio of images. I'm really looking forward to seeing the images he and the other participants produce from the trip.

The image is on purple glass and was from an experimental formula I compounded using sodium bromide and sodium iodide along with Everclear in place of the additional ether most formulae call for. This is also one of my first plates this year and the first full-plate developed in my new mobile darkroom (a converted class-C motorhome). So, I'm pleased with the results on several levels.

This is phenomenal.
Everything clicked and the smooth tonality of this image is astonishing.

Simply superb. When I get my head round how you did it - I suspect I may be even more impressed. Mark

Agreed... and now the we will start to see all the phenomenal work that seems to come out of these Schwabian weekends. Wish I could have been there... even though I don't really shoot landscapes!!

Hope you, and everyone there, had a productive weekend, if this portrait is any indication, then we have some great stuff to look forward to!!

Vic,

I'd say the plate looks even smoother in person though it may be a bit darker. The lack of grain and the wonderful smoothness are two hooks with collodion. However, there's quite a difference between viewing these via reflected light and having them lit up on a CRT or LCD screen. And they look different on different machines. They are very difficult to scan to match color and contrast.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. The weekend was a lot of fun and I too expect to see some great landscapes posted soon.

This is soooo gooood. Really would love to hold one in my hands one day. Great work Joe..

Edit, Thanks also for showing the man behind those wonderful photos. Look forward to see Daniels new work too.
