Normally I dislike this look : post processing to lift mid and shadow tones.
But here it works quite well to convey the mood of the scene --although I wasn't there, can only imagine.

That's a fair comment - the sun was of course from the right so the 'cliff' and beach were quite shadowed yet I needed to avoid blowing out the clouds that were in full sun. Ideally I'd have tried an ND grad filter at a diagonal angle to bring down the sky - but I don't carry that sort of gear when travelling.
I'm actually happy that I was able to pull up the shadows given that this is an older APS sensor camera.
As you say it allowed to capture the feel of the moment.
