Captain Clay, 'Ulua

Captain Clay, 'Ulua

First print in my new darkroom last night, since we moved to a new apartment a couple of weeks ago.

I was photographing on this remote corner of the island of Moloka'i, and I noticed this gentleman snorkeling in the shallows near where I was shooting. It turns out he runs a fishing charter, and was just doing some spearfishing on his day off and came up with this big 'Ulua, much to his surprise, and he asked if I would take a picture for him. While the darkroom was packed up, I e-mailed him a quick neg scan, but wanted to send him a real print as well, since this was one of the more interesting things we saw this trip to Moloka'i.

He was really excited about spearing such a nice fish, but a few weeks later he and his son landed a 533 lb. blue marlin, which was the biggest fish he's caught on his boat, the Hallelujah Hou.

Since originally posting this, I've replaced the image with a dupe of a better print.

Noisy shadows and other weird artifacts courtesy of Nikon CP990 on a copystand used to digitize the print.

Maybe if I look hard enough, I might be able to see some patch of the Jersey shore somewhere. We moved to Maspeth in Queens, so now we have a great view of Manhattan.

About three years later we're back on Moloka'i, and I've been keeping a mounted and matted 8x10" print of this in the car in case I ran into the Captain again, and sure enough, this morning on the Kaunakakai wharf, he was bringing in another charter group while I happened to be checking the ferry schedule....
