Hey Richard. When printing it can take appx 1-3 hours for me to get the result in a print that I want. After that it is pretty easy and mechanical to recreate that interpretatation. I normally print 3-4 prints when working with negatives that are time intensive so that i don't have to do it again. The technique that I used to mask out the background is a technique that i learned from Phil Borges. He uses this technique to selectively sepia tone his portraits of people to make them stand out from the background. Take a look at his work and you'll see what I mean. The out of all the rolls of film I shot in this stand of trees there was only 5 that turned out to be worth anything.
Low tac frisket is available at some art supply stores. It is used by airbrush artisits ....for instance on cars to mask areas out and protect areas of the car body that they don't want to get paint on. It works well for masking on photographs as well so that you can selectively bleach or sepia tone areas of a print.
Liquid frisket can be found in art supply stores etc. It us used to mask areas in water color painting. It's a pink rubber latex about the texture of milk or a little thicker. Is painted on the area of the paper you wish to mask, is rubbed off after use with a finger just like rubber cement. Or with what is called a "mouse" a wad of the previous stripped rubber saved just for this purpose, or an artgum or
kneaded rubber eraser. It can be found under the name "Miskit" also available in other colors. Works great for masking models when air brushing or on paper.
