Good morning, Robert;

OK, we know that 2009 September 12-13 is our time slot for Vancouver, and now we have Steve Anchell speaking to us about his Cookbook. Well, if we can have a group using coffee as a developer, I am sure that we can have someone talking about a cookbook.

Enjoy; Ralph Javins

I don't understand, Ralph?
Steve Anchell wrote the "Darkroom Cookbook" It's being promoted here on Apug. I guess I didn't make myself clear. Sorry

I am not sure it is such a good idea to be cooking in the darkroom. I once got hot sauce all over some client prints. Maybe a small microwave would be good to heat cups of coffee. and a bag of cookies can stretch the day out.

Oh, dear. My attempt at subtle humor has gone arwry.

Good morning, Robert;

Thank you for the full title of Steve Anchell's book. I actually thought that it was something like that. However, an opening was left for me, and I admit that I have difficulty not picking up a good line set up for me by a good straight man. (vaudeville phrase) Having just passed over the Coffee Developers on my way down to the PNWRWOIATSOJ Group choice, the two just seemed to go together. I admit that I was stretching the "cookbook" term a little bit in this particular case, but it did work in this application.

Don, hot sauce all over the client's prints? Sounds like a good story to go along with Steve's talk to us.

Enjoy; Ralph Javins

I'm more a Mel Brooks fan in the area of humor. Mel, Laurel and Hardy, Jack Benny, and Monte Python, Steve Martin, the creative team who brings us "Baby Blues", and I can't remember his name the guy who was on Mork and Mindy show.
Anyways, no problem.

That's him. And I like Bill Crosby. Read all of his books. One on Fatherhood and the other on getting older. Boy can I relate to them now because I'm going though it now in life.

Tell me about getting old. I am 48 hours removed from double Inguinal hernia surgery. Geez what a downhill slide it seems to become.

Good morning, Dennis;

Sorry about the labeling mixup. I admit to having an excessive accumulation of years also, and I was thinking about Don12x20 while typing that message. ("While typing that message." That gives you an idea of the era when I grew up.) I still think your hot sauce story would be a nice garnish to go with Steve Anchell's presentation.

Jonathan Edwards always did have a talent for building a story or a joke. He would not have done very well on The Wall on Laugh In. His word picture of the turtle crossing the road to get to his girl friend is still enjoyable.

Some new lenses and a new body came to live with me this Christmas.

Hi Dennis,

Ouch! Hope it's going well. Take care of yourself and banish the 'downhill slide' thoughts!

Good morning;

Has anyone heard how Dennis Purdy is doing with recovery and recuperation? Should we send him a picure postcard or something? Nothing that would make him laugh, of course.

Hey thanks for the concern. I am definitely on the mend and doing film tests today in the glorious sunshine we have. I want to see side by side exactly the same exposure and light the difference between rodinal 1-100, 1-50, beutlers, and xtol stock on ACROS ei50. Usually when I try to do this test the sun is in and out of the clouds and I can't get it consistent.

For future reference if you ever decide to get an inguinal hernia repair, don't do it while you are having a bronchial congestion. The coughing is killer. I had to sleep three nights on the couch so I could stay in a tight fetal ball while I coughed. I asked everyone, the doctor, the nurses, the anethisioligist (sp?) whether I should worry about the coughing and they all shrugged so I went ahead with the surgery. Now I know. And I am going to let them know as well.

but all is well that ends well and today i feel nearly back to normal with a couple ibuprofen.

thanks Dennis

Good morning, Dennis;

Nice to hear that you are indeed mending and performing tasks of interest to you.

You have sunshine? Wow. Up here in my portion of Latte Land we have our usual protective cloud layer. I also prefer full sunshine for conducting tests of lenses and other things. It is one thing that is repeatable and reproducible by others if they wish to duplicate the tests and confirm the results. I am down to just a couple of rolls of Efke/Adox 25 film right now. It is time to contact the Freestyle people for some of the Adox CMS 20 film. With its availability and manufacturer processing ratings down to ASA 6 or 12, this could become my preferred testing film. With all the money we save by not needing to buy sun block, we can afford film.

Good to hear from you, Dennis.

We are looking at beautiful weather all week.. just freezing at night with morning fog and sunshine all the rest the day. Solar heat in the house. The jets are really marking up the sky so it must be pretty cold up there.

Glad to hear you are on the mend, Dennis. Sounds like you had a rough time though. Yes, the weather has been great. I have been sitting up here on "Pill Hill" thinking gotta get out with my camera. But, color photography likes it just a bit over cast for better shadow and hight light details.
I just bought a new light weight tripod for bike ride trips and I think tomorrow I'm going to try it out with my Crown graphic.
Yea!

Anyone know of a bookstore called "We love books"? They are selling a bunch of Polaroids of Ansel Adams, John Sexton, Don Worth and others on Ebay. The bookstore says it located in the Pacific Northwest. I thought I might bid and save on shipping in they are local.

Hi All,
Denise here, reporting from Newport, Oregon, with an update on workshops.

I have an appointment next Thurs (1/29) with the director of the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts. Long story - short: our 'case' would be well served by coming with as much material and specific proposals as possible. I know that Robert wants to wait until we have a commitment from the Visual Arts Center, but I'm afraid that puts the cart in front of the horse. Newport may seem small and casual, but that shouldn't be mistaken for unprofessional. The Arts community here is large, organized, and sophisticated (i.e. selective).

Vaughn has already sent me a very good packet of presentation material. I hope a few more of you can do the same - asap. You are not expected to make a firm commitment, although you should have good intentions! Just send a description of the kind of workshop you'd like to teach (along with a short resume) , the facilities you need to teach it, and an estimate of how many people you could hope would attend in a year.

An f.y.i about weather and workshops: I am currently building what I'm calling a 'shooting gallery' at my house. It has a very tall ceiling and a 5' x 10' span of frosted glass on the south wall. If the weather is wet or windy, any workshop that needs to set up big, dirty still-lifes can move that operation to my place (five miles south of the VAC). Any camera set-up that is clean can be done beautifully at the VAC. The windows of the meeting room have the light and view that kings would envy.

You may send your material by email or snail mail. Email is editor@thelightfarm.com. Contact me there also if you'd like my land address.

Hope to hear from you,
d

Denise

Are you asking for standalone workshops (e.g. all day) or workshops similar to last year's Newport September meet?

Don

Hi Don,

Any and everything photographic. The point is to justify the VAC opening back up the darkroom and committing to some advertising that "Newport Equals Photography".

Hi Don,
I don't understand how this forum works. I just answered your question below and it showed up on top of the page. If this post goes there, too, I'm responding to your comment from today.

Sight and Insight
The usual method of photographing is based on "looking for pictures" in ones' environment. When photographing in this way, we tend to base our recognition of what makes a good picture on past experience and previously seen photographs. This approach is limiting because it is based on the past, while the creative process always flowers in the present moment.

In this exciting workshop, we will explore an intriguing alternative: to allow objects in our environment to guide us, moment by moment, toward the pictures. At the same time, we will learn to deeply tune into ourselves. This approach allows ones' personal style to blossom naturally with less interference from self-limiting thoughts, habits or past experience.

This workshop is open to anyone with a camera, regardless of experience level or whether using film or digital.

John Wimberley has been hailed as "one of America's preeminent landscape photographers." With 42 years in photography, John's critically acclaimed work has been honored with more than 60 major exhibitions and has been published around the world. Currently represented by galleries in Asia, North America and Europe, his photographs are in hundreds of public and private collections, including many major museums. John is also a retired Yoga teacher, and brings a body-centered perspective to teaching photography
