Good morning, Robert;

Is John Wimberley associated with the Wimberley tripod head for use with large lenses? If he is, there could be a supplemental discussion happening with him if time allows.

Enjoy; Ralph Javins

Hello Ralph.
No John has nothing to do with the Wimberley tripods. He has something to do with Pyro development though. Back in the 70's, I think he reintroduced pyro into photography with his WD2D formula. Gordon Hutchings took that a step further and made PMK pyro and wrote the "Book of Pyro". Gordon tips his hat off to John for getting the ball rolling. Today, John's formula has been improved to be WD2D+.
John is a wonderful guy.. A gentle soul and a great believer in sharing what he knows about photography. He's considered a printers printer because his work is so beautifully produced. I have had the pleasure of knowing John since the mid 80's when I was just starting to understand pyro developing. I use John's and Gordon's and Rollo pyro for all my black and white photography.
You should check out John's website, www.johnwimberleyphotography.com.

So are ready getting ready for the Winter blast this coming weekend? It could offer some interesting photo opportunities!

#129
Last time we had a major winter blast was a good opportunity to find out that my 90mm lens on the Pentax 67 gets very stiff and hard to turn in the cold.

I will go out in the neighborhood if there is a good cover of snow or ice. Otherwise it is a good opportunity to stay in the darkroom.

I can't get the hang of this group/forum thing. I thought I was replying to Robert Brummitt's question about the winter blast and instead it seems my reply went to a Robert Javins post.

Good morning;

Well, the real hammering that the weather guys were predicting we would receive last night and today, Wednesday, has not yet materialized. Our temperatures up here in Latte Land are in the middle 30's F. right now. There is a dinner gathering I might be able to make after all.

Our common protective cloud cover is firmly in place. (Man, do we save on sunblock!) Some Kodachrome would come in handy right now to brighten our spirits.

I am watching the world rapidly turning white right now at 8AM in Portland. It is looking more and more like my entire christmas gift list is going to be photographs made by me in my darkroom. Over the years I am forcing some people to collect my work. That is all they get for Christmas.

I went out to do some snow photography and got dumped on. I spent the better part of an hour drying off my Crown Graphic, tripod and light meter after having a hot cocoa. I sure hope I got something worth the cold and wet. Latest I heard from the weather gurus is were heading to more cold, snow and possible ice storm!

Good morning, USPNWRWAORIDSOJ;

We did make it up to the pass today for the first day of ski patrol. They have working radios to start the season. We will also be up there Christmas Day. We also assisted another ski patroller with the changing of a tyre while on the way up this morning.

The driving was "interesting." Finding someone across your lane as you come around a curve is always good for an adrenalin rush. Running 50 to 55 mph with the variable speed limit sign saying 45 mph and having semi trucks passing you on the ice in the lanes to the left is also encouraging. Perhaps I am just getting old.

When we get the bird feeders reloaded, and the light returns, I will try for some photogrphs of the visitors. We did have a Red-headed Sap Sucker on the pine tree to the south of the house this afternoon when we returned home. And I could hear that uncooperative Pileated Woodpecker heckling me from a tree across the street. One of these days I WILL get a photograph of him.

Yes I am going a bit stir crazy though it has been nice walking to the store. My spouse is a Max operator and has been sleeping on the Beaverton garage floor on an air mattress and working 12 hours a day. I spent today working on still life photography that I am going to continue with in the morning before going out to do some last minute snow pics in the neighborhood. Oh yes last minute Xmas shopping.. maybe.

Good morning, Fellow Photographers of the Pacific Northwest;

I hope that this Holiday Season finds you in good health and good spirits. At the very least, this year we have many wonderful opportunities for some high contrast photographs up here in Latte Land.

Enjoy, and Merry Christmas;

Ralph,

Yep, we sure do. Currently looking at about 26" of snow on the ground. Big Rock Road has a good 3' snowbank on each side of it as you drive along the road... Will be interesting to see if I can get out on Saturday. Got someone interested in my F5 with the 135f3.5 Nikkor-Q, who wants to meet me @ Kenmore then.

BTW: I tried to get Doug to just give the Nikon F/Nikkormat Handbook of Photography book to ya, but he insisted on paying me $20 for it (more like apply it toward the FM2n meter recalibration job that he did), so I'll refund you the $ next time I see you...

Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Good morning, John;

I tried to see Doug yesterday, but he was closed when I arrived at 1315. I bought a latte from Sarah across the street instead. Do not worry about any funding. I think that lingering cold I had is finally gone. We spent today up at Snoqualmie Pass with ski patrol. For us, it was an enjoyable quiet Christmas. Although yesterday we did spend over an hour late in the afternoon cleaning the rain soaked snow off the screened in back porch area. The roof was beginning to sag. An interesting Christmas Eve. Good luck with the driving on Saturday.

Just cold and wet here on the northern coast of California, with snow up in the hills. Spent the day indoors with three hyped-up 11 year olds, but that is what Christmas is all about. LOL! I have some family driving down from Portland tomorrow. They are actually live in Spokane, so I think they can handle the road conditions.

I hope all had a great Christmas and I wish you all the best for the coming new year!

Happy New Year to All!

I've always thought of the day after Christmas as the real New Year's Day. I love the holidays, but enough is enough! The Coast doesn't have the beautiful snow, but the driving rain beating on the wall of my darkroom is a mantra for creativity. I'm cleaning up and mixing fresh chemicals for a whole new round of work. I haven't had a chance to even get in the darkroom since Thanksgiving, so today feels like a burst of Potential. I 'fess up to my seasonal slothfulness just in case anyone thinks they're the only one who lets the analog ball drop now and again. You're in good company (or at least, you're in my company :smile:)

Happy Photo'ing! (and all you Snow Bunnies, be safe.)

Hey there Denise! Starting Jan 5th, the Boys are back in school and the University does not start back up until the 19th -- that will be my time to dive deeply into the black jello of carbon printing again! I have has a couple platinum printing sessions lately (including a great image of Alex in Fern Canyon), but I really need to concentrate on carbon. Far too many negatives to print!

I took the Boys to the beach (the north side of the entrance to Humboldt Bay). We even had a touch of sun and the Boys got quite wet dodging waves and having a great time -- far too much indoor-time lately! Enjoy your time with the chemicals!

Ralph,

Ok. Hopefully he's open this weekend. I suspect he'll be off until sometime next week. Anyway, it finally has changed over to rain here in Duvall. The lunar landscape should be disappearing soon...

Vaughn,
Two weeks in black jello! Have a great time. Your platinums are marvelous (I'd love to see the print of Alex. I imagine he's grown even from just this summer), but I'm glad you're carving out some serious carbon time. You're an inspiration. If you can find the time, anyone can.

Hi Ralph,

I just got an email notice from you by way of APUG. I've never seen the format before and I'm not sure how to answer except here (? a 'New Profile Message' ?) I'm meeting with the OCCA Director this week. Things are still up in the air at the Art Center, so I don't have anything new to report or firm dates yet. I'll let you know things as I find them out. Thank you very, very much for your interest and support.

I have exchange emails with Steve Anchell about doing a litle talk about his Cookbook and I'll share with you his response,
"Thank you for the invite. As always, I am pleased to do anything I can to encourage and stimulate people to practice film photography. If I can be of help to you with the APUG event please feel free to call on me. At this moment Sept 12-13 are open."
So that is good news. Don't you think?
