U.S. Pacific Northwest Regional WA-OR-ID and the State of Jefferson

Welcome, David!

Unfortunately all requests by Kirk Keyes, TheDreadPirate and myself, to create either an Oregon or Pacific Northwest regional group has fallen on deaf ears. We've been relegated to a "social group" posting....with the disadvantage that it all gets lumped together - no way to form separate identifiable threads....

Maybe its time to Create www.NWAPUG.com???? Sean....this isn't what most of us want, but it may be the ultimate solution for those of us in NW USA....

Good morning, David (and Don, too);

David, there are several photographers in the Seattle area on this site already. Welcome to the group. Thank you for the comment about the difficulty in locating it. It will be used.

Don, the comment by David may be really useful and persuasive. David has confirmed what you, Kirk, and others (including me) have been saying. It really is not at all clear why the request to be moved to Regional Forums cannot be done. There is a New England Regional Forum. There are others clearly associated with geographical areas. Why can't this one be put into a place where it logically would seem to fit?

I am beginning to understand the feelings of frustration others have described.

Enjoy;

Perhaps we should start a campaign of sorts - take turns nagging Sean. It really doesn't make sense for there not to be at least one PNW region. Having met so many great photographers in August, I think it would be a shame for us only to have an annual event. I'd like to see an easy way for people to post 'meet-up' events, grand or modest, and have a pretty good idea that the PNW APUG'ers would see the announcements in time to respond and participate.

I agree

Plus this current venue does not allow us to have threads. Threads like "Lets all meet up in the Palouse for three days of image making" vs other threads like "Local photographer shows work at <blah> v.s. "We're having a local meet up in Portland in the month of February - who is interested??" etc etc

We really need to get this campaign going. Geez if Denver can have a "regional group", what's holding back PNW or Oregon or Washington?

Don,
You might be on to something. I'll try to come up with a really creative 'offensive' post. Trouble is, it's hard to figure out what's offensive on APUG :tongue:

In the meantime, I posted a 'Yea' vote on the feedback thread regarding this issue.

Good morning, fellow photographers in and near Latte Land;

The plight of our curious location is continuing. Surely these posts have not gone un-noticed. Has anyone heard back from "the management" about this question?

I am guessing that Sean is somehow not able to be on top of APUG right now. He is on holiday or consumed with some other thing and perhaps this creating a new section for a minority group is more involved than we think. That would be just my guess because there is so much evidence of his being a communicative, willing to help person. In spite of the fact that he never did get around to answering my technical question about why I can't get an image to load with my name.

Good morning, Dennis;

In the "Feedback and Discussion" forum, Sean responded yesterday in the thread "Sporadic Outages." It is quite possible that he has returned from his triennial family trek.

Should we continue to add to the length of messages in the "Oregon Regional Focus Group" thread in the "Feedback and Discussion" forum?

Enjoy;

Hello everyone.
What Sean explained to me is this. He is in the process of migrating or blending the Regional and Social groups into one section of APUG. He made an announcement awhile back and is waiting for an up grade in programing to finish the task. So that means the U.S. Pacific Northwest Regional is what it is. It's our forum to post events, get togethers, call outs, and other fun stuff. Does this mean that Oregon doesn't get its own forum or Washington or Idaho? I don't know. I think that we all can play well with each other. We have one of the best regions in the country. We have one of the best mannered folks around and we have great ideas of who we are.
Sean has asked that I be a moderator and I would be happy to do that. It would be fun! If that is o.k. with you that is?

I'm fine with that as long as people don't get upset if someone posts something kind of last minute and specific to a particular city or area, such as "hey, anyone want to go shooting tonight in [blank] town?"

SO to get to our forum, we have to leave the forum, go to the social group, and then click yet again on a really small link to get into the forum? That seems a little far out of the way... Not what I was hoping to get for us.

Hello Denise
From what I understand from Sean is that Regional and social groups are being blended accordingly. So We are the Pacific Northwest regional forum. Sean is waiting on an upgraded program to finish the task. How it will look on the APUG main page I don't know?
I'm sure Sean will let everyone know once he's done.

All's quiet on the Pacific Northwest front? Nothing new is happening? I understand the Portland Art Museum is having a lecture about Landscape photography, Sunday, November 2nd, 2pm. You have to buy tickets ahead so look up the Museum's website for more information and so forth.

Well, Robert, now that you ask...

I've been wondering how many APUG'ers or wannabe filmies live close enough to Newport to get together on a regular basis. The Newport Visual Arts Center is in the process of hiring a new director, after being pretty rudderless for months now. Its darkroom has become a storage room and the Yaquina Photographers group has gone 100% digital.

I'm guessing that if I went to the new director with the idea of promoting analog (in addition to the de facto digital group) I might be able to get something rolling - maybe even get the junk out of the darkroom.

I'm not ambitious enough to steer this all by my lonesome, and I'm not the super-organizer that you are, but I'd love to work with a co-op of like-minded photogs.

Good day! Printed all through the night -- platinum/palladium this time (carbon was last week). I had several negatives I wanted to get to, including a few from our week-end together up in Newport. Unfortunately, three Yosemite negs and two local negs yelled the loudest and got printed instead...next time!

I gave a carbon printing demo to a visiting workshop last week...wish I could have done it for the group in Newport. It takes several hours of prep and a couple hours for the demo itself...plus a heap of hardware. We'll see what I can do next year in Vancouver, WA!

I am looking forward to giving a carbon printing workshop (5 days!) in Yosemite next April. That is how one really dives into the process! Hands on and hard at it! Here is a link for more info on the workshop... http://www.anseladams.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2263

Best of luck Deise with reserecting the Newport Visual Art's darkroom. That would be a grand thing! Two friends did that in Hayward, CA. They saved a Park and Rec darkroom from being dismantled and for the last 25 years have been operating a public darkroom with classes, workshops and shows. Boy, I'd help if I could with the VAC down in Newport. Loved that little town and all it's treasures. Once the new director and you have a talk let him or her know I could help direct workshops down there.

#97
Vaughn: Congratulations on the carbon workshop! Your students are in for a treat.

Robert: I wish you could help, but I know it gets to be a long drive, especially in the winter. That's my excuse for not making it to any PPF meetings. But, I will definitely pass on the word about workshops if things proceed to that point. Thank you.

And Dennis: beautiful photography!

Robert, Vaughn (and anyone else who teaches workshops):

Is there a basic set of conditions at a given facility that you would look for and welcome if you were thinking about holding a workshop there?

Well, having operated several workshops the one criteria I have to say are low costs, space, lots of venues, and most important to photographers, Food.
I always strive to have low cost workshops. Something where the its a win/win/win for everyone. The instructor gets paid, the other principles get paid and the students get a good quality workshop and lots of time with the instructor and with the subject matter at a fair price.
I've always wanted to do a Oregon Coast workshop and I know that some of the photographers I have worked with have also expressed an interest but I was limited as to where. If the new director of the VAC is open to ideas, the city managers can see potential of helping organizing workshops and promoting them and local businesses see potential customers? A series of photo shows and workshops could happen.
