Jane and I are going to be leaving Anacortes WA sometime on Friday morning if we can get some of the various requirements satisfied (cat sitter, etc.). There is a good likelihood we'll succeed. It's a loooong way down there. So we don't know when we'll be arriving, and we won't be bringing much. We're on our way to the Morris Graves museum in Eureka (! I think Eureka always has a "!" following it, doesn't it?) to do a bit of research on a painting, as well as photograph, etc. I haven't even read all the entries here yet, but will do so tomorrow; maybe we can figure out where to meet up with the group. I'll post subsequent questions etc. then.

I hope your trip goes well, and that you make it to Newport along the way. It looks like the weather will be gorgeous all along the coast. I'm looking forward to meeting you and Ralph. Dennis Purdy will also be coming, along with a number of people from the Portland and Corvallis photo communities.

I love that the internet offers a 'community' to far-flung individuals. Those of us who still use film often don't have much company in our local communities. But, there still isn't anything like actually getting to know people face-to-face. This will be fun.

4 by 5 Polaroid or Fuji B&W "Instant" film needed.

For training purposes in Newport, can anyone bring a pack or two of 4 by 5 instant film to fit either a Graphic Pack Film Holder or the Polaroid 545 film sheet holder?

In preparing for the weekend, I visited Glazer's in Seattle looking for 4 by 5 Polaroid (old stock?) or Fuji black and white instant film packs or individual sheets/envelopes. Nothing. Nada. But they do have a wonderful supply of Fuji 3 & 1/4 by 4 & 1/4 ASA 100 & 3000 B&W and color instant film for the old Polaroid pack film cameras.

For reimbursment, you can choose either a direct cash payment from me, or a replacement of the closest current equivalent I can get from B&H.

The discovery at Glazer's of the supply of "regular" size Polaroid film ("Fujiroid;" I like it) was really encouraging to me. This means that my old Tektronix 5 inch round CRT oscilloscope cameras can see some continued use.

I wish to say Thanks to Denise, Rich ad Don for organizing the first annual PNW gathering. I thought it a great adventure. Met lots of new friends, saw Don's really big camera ( I think my poor back would break from lugging that beast), and getting the opportunity to explore Newport, Oregon. Of course, I also had the pleasure of seeing some really nice photography and offer advice to some new folks who are just getting into or back into photography. I had asked those photographing the event to share the images with the greater APUG community to show them that yes we are just as active as they are.
Thanks again and I plan to attend the second annual PNW gathering at WSU, Vancouver.

We had our first (to be annual) meeting this weekend and it was great! Fifty photographers, give and take, over the two days. I was astonished and inspired by the level of expertise, energy and enthusiasm. When it came time for the portfolio reviews, one after another collection of truly beautiful work rolled out. If we had tried to orchestrate a representation of the widest and best that photography has to offer, we couldn't have done what happened by chance. We've already set the time and date for next year (Vancouver, Washington, the second weekend in September.)

Of particular delight to me was the number of women who attended, each a master of her craft.

I want to particularly thank Jeannette Altmann for her Van Dyke process demonstration, Rich Bergeman for his Pt/Pd demonstration, and Vaughn Hutchins for the wonderful discussion of his carbon printing technique.

Last, but by no means least, I want to thank the folks who so graciously listened to my ramble about making silver gelatin emulsions .

The reports you have read about the first US Pacific Northwest Regional gathering are true. It was an interesting, informative, and well organized event. All of this from a group that is only three months old, and the idea of having this gathering came up only 6 weeks before it happened.

The weather ranged all over the place to meet the requirements that anyone may have desired; from moody fog to bright sunlight.

I was surprised by a harbor seal surfacing about four (4) feet from me as I was kneeling down on the pier photographing a jellyfish. He did not stay long enough for my reactions to allow me to swing the camera around to him for a really closeup portrait.

Many interesting people. Don Nelson's 12 by 20 view camera is impressive. Denise Ross's little folding 4 by 5 is beautiful. The demonstrations of "alternative processes" shows that Eastman-Kodak and company do not have the only show in town. Will I be there in Vancouver next year? Yes.

Now I just need to try to get all of the photographs taken of this year's event loaded onto the site.

Photographers and processes for 2009 gathering so far is this. Christopher Burkett on color Ilfordchrome prints, Russ Dodd on Photogravures and Terry Halsted on Bromoils. I have been getting requests about large and medium format cameras. It would be great if I can get a film rep to come and share film plans.

I remind people that Robert's optimism is great, but its a year out....the schedule is tentative and it may turn out that the list Robert has shared with you may not materialize due to unforseen events in the presenter's schedules (so we all know that commits mentioned have to be treated as tentative until late next summer).

You want to hear my horror story of this year's meet in Newport? We love horror storys. I went a couple days early to the Seal Rock Beach with my Beautiful 2.8F Rolleiflex and tripod. After walking around and planting my tripod many times in the sand for pictures the wind came up so I went back to the car and took my late model white face Rolleiflex off the tripod and set it on top the car while I wiped the sand off the tripod legs. I was hungry so I tossed stuff in the back and drove to Newport Thriftway to buy a deli sandwich. I was driving pretty fast and one corner marked 50 MPH I took at 60 because the Suburu handles really well. I got to Thriftway and got a sandwich and did some shopping for later eats and made my way back to the car and to my suprise and shock there was my Rolleiflex sitting on top of the car!!!!! The roof rack had saved me but I was shaken. I hope next year not to cross the interstate bridge with the camera on top the car.

Yes! I would say yes to Don’s characterization of me. I am an optimist and that’s because I believe I can pull it together. I get very excited about photography as an art form, as an exploration of one’s environment. As a way of sharing ideas and techniques! I came away from the last PNW gathering with lots of ideas and energy!
Don is right that the speakers I have so far lined up, Christopher Burkett, Russ Dodd and Terry Halstead can change their minds or have a conflict of time. But, I plan to keep reminding them of the gathering and hope that they don’t. I like to see people in a good light that they say what they mean and do as they say. There maybe only one conflict and that was brought up, discussed and then put away.
If the other organizers Denise, Rich and you Don have further other ideas of speakers and demos, I’m willing to work on it. Bringing Mr. Burkett was one of your ideas, Don. I just acted upon it. You also suggested a discussion or tour of the Portland Art Museum or Oregon Historical Society photography collection. I have made the calls and even now waiting to hear from both institutions.
I have over 12 years doing these things with workshops, lectures and other events. Planning starts right after the previous one is finished. Again, I am an optimist. I love photography!

Robert - Is there a Photographer's Fanfaire this year? I really enjoyed the first two and I was hoping there would be one this year again.

How do you make thread here? This place is one long run-on post. Can't we just get a regonal group in the real part of APUG?

For Dan's45; welcome to the group. There are lots of reasons to expose film in Tacoma. Turn the camera to the east, and Mount Ranier is right there. The old Asarco stack is gone now (I watched that come down). The waterfront is there with all of the cranes for lifting containers if you like mechanical angular forms and shapes. The Ferry dock to Vashon Island. The Point Defiance Zoo. The Glass Museum is right there with Dale's stuff. The new South Bound Tacoma Narrows Bridge is there. Even the new I-5 and I-705 interchange area is interesting. There is much in Tacoma. Any place that can boast of both Bing Crosby and Jimi Hendrix has a lot going for it. By the way, I live northeast of Seattle.

Kirk Keyes and Robert Brummitt; you were involved in the question about where on the APUG site the USPNWRG would be located, either here or in the Regional Forums. Did anything come of that discussion? Did anyone ever explain why the USPNWRG is found in the Social Groups section?

In general, finding film is getting more difficult. Not impossible, but certainly not as convenient as back in the 20th Century. Many of my old favorite and standard film choices are gone. Just finding a film that is slow enough to allow simple testing of a lens in sunlight (a fairly repeatable lighting condition, when we get it here in the Pacific Northwest) is not easy now.

I was suprised to see that there is no regional group for the Pacific NW when I joined. I'm from Covington, WA, myself. I maintain my own darkroom at home. Most of my recent film work has been with IR of coal mining areas, particularly Cougar Mountain, near Newcastle, and Franklin, near Black Diamond, though I'm trying to work back into traditional black and white, and get back into macro.
