The Olympus OM cult

Hello

#1
Hi guys, Ime new to this group just thought i would introduce myself and say Hi my name is Dave I'me 63 been shooting digital for 15 yrs and I have just gone retro with buying an OM3 and hoping for some help now and in the future.
I have noticed on my om3 when i turn the shutter ring, on some of the slower speeds i can hear what sounds like a loose spring I dont know if its normal or if it needs to be
seen, I haven't had time today to put a film through and test it, I am hoping some of the experienced users can help me or at least point me to a good repairer.

cheers

Hey Dave welcome.

The OM-3 has basically the same mechanical shutter as the OM-1. The slow speeds (under 1/60th) are governed by a clock mechanism. Perhaps that's the sound you hear?

The faster speeds are controlled by how wide the opening is between the first curtain and the second so they all sound pretty much the same.

Get some film in there and shoot away. Try all the speeds and settings and take some notes. That way you can tell if something is off.

Hi David
I send all of my Olympus gear to Newton Ellis in Liverpool- they specialise in OM cameras and have a reasonable pricing policy, expect to pay about £100 for a CLA on your OM3

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the group. The OM-3 is a wonderful camera and well worth getting fixed up and using. If you can find a place in the UK, that would be your best bet. John at Zuiko.com does great work and he has serviced many of my Oly's. However, he was never fast, and now that he is only doing repair work "part time" his lead times are very long. The OM-2 I sent to him at the beginning of the year took just about six months to get back. This isn't meant as a criticism; we are lucky to have folks like him around. But it is handy to have all the facts.

Also, judging from the cost to ship packages to my niece in England I would estimate that the postage back and forth would be at least half again the cost of the CLA.

Thank you guys for the links, i did in the end send it to John in the U.S
but i asked for a pro rush job more expensive but worth it, just hope
it takes less than six months LOL.
Will let you all know what its like when i get it back.
I am thinking of getting an OM 4 , I shall try someone in the UK next.
