Though supplies are often a bit sporadic, and management have the annoying habit of keeping their stash of second hand gear "secret" to sell on eBay instead of to local clientele, they usually have a decent stock of film and processing chemicals on hand. Deal with Johan.

Getting quite run down these days, they still have a sizeable stash of darkroom equipment, old cameras (Mamiya, etc) and they have Ilford chemicals and paper (usually in small quantities). Good if you need an enlarger, projector, etc. Mrs. Case is a sweetheart, friendly and professional.

In Durban, FotoMax (www.fotomax.co.za - 031 512 5177 - Redlyn Business Park, 5 Riverhorse Place, Riverhorse Valley, Durban - off Queen Nandi Drive) stock Ilford FP4+ and HP5+ B&W film (and probably colour film as well, I didn't check) in 35mm and 120. They process 35mm and 120 film, including traditional B&W films, and can dry-mount prints. I even got a safelight bulb there!

A useful tip regarding safe light bulbs...

Someone once recommended red LEDs and it seemed to provoke a lot of controversy when I suggested it.

But having looked at the spectral sensitivity graphs for Ilford Multigrade paper and the output spectrum of red and even amber LEDs it seems this is indeed a very good suggestion.

I ended up just getting some red LED party bulbs from a lighting shop. They work perfectly. Other folks have reported great success with amber LEDs, too.

I was looking at the technical specs for Foma paper the other day and they specifically mentioned using Orange LEDs as safe lights.

I'm still getting my colour neg film processed by RGB Pixellab - used to be Beith - in the Beith building in Sandton.
