Canon FD Group

How Many Canon FD Cameras Do You Own?

#1
Well, this group seems to be awful quiet, so I thought I'd post a message that most anybody who wants to be here can answer. And I, for one, am interested in the answers.

So I'll lead off. But first a bit about my experience with Canon. My first 35mm camera was a Canon AE-1. About a year after buying it, I bought an A-1, and from that point forward, the rest of the FD cameras I bought were manual, mechanical cameras. Until I changed systems to Nikon (Oops). At which point, I started over again. But I didn't start over again until digital had gained a serious enough foothold to cause most film-based gear to plummet in value. Which is at least part of the reason why I'm asking the subject question. So the follow up question to the subject question would be -- how many of your Canon FD cameras have you purchased since digital caused the price plunge?

My answer to that second question is "all of them." Prior to 2009, I had zero Canon FD cameras. Then I started getting the itch for an old F-1 -- still my favorite camera of all time. So I bought one, and that's when the dam broke. I now have:

Original F-1: 2 (both with winders)
New F-1: 1 (with motor drive)
FTb: 2 (1 chrome, one black)
EF: 1
A-1: 2 (1 with motor drive)
AE-1 Program: 1 (black, with winder)
T-90: 1

So that's a total of ten. Not so many, but I think it's a decent selection, which includes the oldest and the newest FD cameras. I'll wager that some of you have more.

In descending order of age:
1 T90 plus 300TL. The last camera I bought new in 1987.
1 F1-N bought used about 4 years ago
1 A1 bought new in 1984
1 AE-1 bought new in 1978. A big step up from the Zenit E I bought in high school in 1973.
1 EF bought used about 3 years ago.

All are in good working condition.

Plus about a dozen FD mount lenses. Mostly Canon but also the odd Vivitar and Tamron.

2x FTbn 0ne bought with load of FD gear from a 'disillusioned' Camera Club member who said he could never get 'Winning Photos', one body given by another Club Member
2x AE-1 one bought new one secondhand
1x A-1 good outfit GIVEN some years ago by a Gent whose Brother had died and found that I give 'Old Cameras a Good Home'

I don't consider my FD a financial investment only one in my pleasure in using it, I have owned the majority of my FD equipment for around thirty years and will never sell it anyway. I also can't think of a worst financial investment to get a return on at the moment than film cameras.

Right now just an A1 and TX that has a hole in the shutter curtain. I'd like to get a new F1, T90, and EF.

I am looking for my first T90 and hope to find a Data Memory Back 90 as well.

#9
Original F1, recently serviced
A1, door doesn't close properly so lets in light. Bought s/h in mid-nineties.
T90 in shabby and rattlely condition but somehow works perfectly.

I hope you are aware that the year dates on the data memory back for the T90 or any of the FD cameras for that matter morajr don't go to 2015.

#11
I think the A bodies dates only until 1986. I could be wrong as I have never wanted one even in the early 80's

benjiboy the DMB 90 user manual says: "The auto calendar is programmed from 1985 to 2099".
Is your experience at odds with this? https://www.flickr.com/photos/75969628@N05/20094059685/in/datetaken-public/

I've never owned a T90 databack moranjr, I know it's the case with the F1 and A series cameras, as you say I'm probably as you say wrong about the T90.

I have an A-1 I bought new in 1981, an AE-1 I inherited from my dad in 1998 and an original F-1 I bought from a co-worker in the 90s. The F-1 was sort of a joke, he was razzing me that when a nuclear EMP took out all the electronics on the planet, the F-1 would still work (he knew I owned FD lenses). The A-1 is the only body I used at all regularly. That body is my second, after I dropped the first out of a fanny pack onto concrete in the mid-90s -- it still seemed to work, but had some dents and made some strange noises. After looking at "upgrading" to EOS, I decided to be cheap and just buy a used A-1 body in excellent condition (less than the price of one decent EOS lens equivalent to any of the FDs I owned!)

I do mostly medium format for film these days, but have had the A-1 out a few times in the past few years.

I just bought another Canon F1, it's an absolutely mint F1n it's in such beautiful condition the price in the shop was very reasonable and I couldn't resist it, it's the only camera I've bought in more than twenty years, that makes five F1's I have which I know is a lot but I'm retired and I shoot almost every day so they all get used.

Well, I thought I'd add to my list -- since starting this thread, I now own a nice T70, a Canon I've always wondered about but never even used before. It's a decent little tool, I must say.

As for accessories, some of which y'all have listed, well I have a few.
Motor Drive AE-FN for my New F-1
Winder F and Motor Drive MF for my two old F-1n's.
Motor Drive MA and Power Winder A for my A-1 and AE-1P
300 TL flash for my T90
199A flash for my A-1 and F-1N

Lenses, geez, I guess I own about 20 or so Canon FD and FL with a few aftermarket ones included.

My favorite FD lens of all? That would probably have to be my 85mm f/1.2 SSC Aspherical.

I forgot to add:

I also own a working Booster T Finder for the original F-1. A cool piece of hardware.

In the sequence that I acquired them:
AE-1 (Black) bought new as Christmas present for self in 1978, serviced and working well.
A-1 bought new in 1984, serviced and working well.
T90 bought new in 1987, serviced and working well plus 300TL and 60T3? remote cord.
EF #1 bought from eBay, a bit scruffy and has some bright marks on the shutter blades. Pre spilt-image screen. Not tested yet.
EF #2 bought from APUG member EX cond, serviced and working well.
F1-N bought S/H. Good cond with a bit of brassing. Service history unknown but working well.
T50 bought as a rear lens cap. I wanted the FD 35-70 f2.8-3.5 zoom that was attached.
About 10 FD lenses from 20mm to 300mm including zooms. Really like the FD 35-70 f2.8-3.5 (2 copies).

One less F1n than I had I just returned to the store I bought it from and got a refund. because it had a serious shutter fault, I'm not going to replace it because I have too many FD cameras already.

I have pared down my Canon FD arsenal this year to six bodies, 2 F1 n's, 2 New F1's, an EF and a T90 that I keep purely for its TTL flash, and programme mode ability that my other bodies don't have that I sometimes find useful.

(Well since this thread popped to life ... )
Back in June or so I decided to make a stab at photographing the solar eclipse in August. Planned to use two cameras, one digital, and one film, my Canon A-1. As luck would have it, I never got into long telephotos that much, so I looked around and ended up buying an FD 100-300 f/5.6 zoom (for the princely sum of $89, as I recall). I also added a 2x Telextender. So I shot 400Tmax in my A-1 at 600mm equivalent, and it was a pretty successful venture. (I also picked up an EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS zoom for my EOS 40D -- I've already recorded a hawk perched on my garden fence with that, since the eclipse, so its considerably higher acquisition cost seems somewhat justified!)

There was some occasional cloud interference, but in this case, it added to the drama. I got a print of this into a local juried art show this fall, even got an award, whoo hoo!

I also acquired two FD series right angle finder attachments to avoid a crick in the neck from this exercise -- they even fit my EOS 40D. A word of advice for 2024 -- with one of those beaucoup stop solar filters on, centering the sun against a black sky in a black frame is like spotting a black cat in a coal mine -- you can't see the frame, so that was a bit dodgy. At long focal lengths the sun is moving across the frame pretty swiftly, and constant tweaking was necessary. If I'm still practicing the art in 2024, I expect to make sure I've added a 3-axis geared head to the mix.

I took the A-1 with the classic FD 35-105 f/3.5 to Washington DC and shot a few rolls of 400 Tmax when I, plus my wife and a niece, went to the Women's March in January too. (There's three shots in my gallery here at Photrio/APUG!

(OK, back to lurk mode ... :whistling: )

In 1986 I bought a new AE-1 Program as my only Canon camera, and that's where I would've stayed were it not for APUG and Ben mentioning the EF a few years ago.

After a bit of research, I found a beautiful EF.

Then I found an FTb at a swap meet for $10 (perfect condition).

This year I bought a mint F-1N with AE finder and motor drive.

So now my FD collection is complete for me.
