Can I ask what difference did the use of selenium make to the print compared to what it might have looked like without the selenium, assuming that it was intended to make a difference rather than just for reasons of longevity?

These days I selenium tone my prints mostly for longevity, but also, depending on the strength of the toner and the time spent in the solution, the difference in the contrast and tone of the print. Alternatively I use sepia toner for some prints.
