TH Darkroom Ice Cream Evo - quite an interesting name!

Made by Takumi Home Darkroom and sold through Reflx Lab, this popped onto my radar last week and I ended up ordering one. The main things that interested me were the built-in spout/funnel setup for pouring chemistry, along with the ability to drain the tank while it’s still rotating. It can also sit submerged in a water bath, useful if you’re trying to keep development temps consistent.

It’s 3D printed with a few carbon fiber bits mixed in, and overall the build quality feels perfectly reasonable for the price point. Definitely not a product everyone will care about, but for people running smaller Jobo tanks (1510, 1520, 1530, 2510, 2520), it seems like a pretty practical option.

Packaging was surprisingly nice, with a few thoughtful details that made it feel less like random gear tossed into a box. They offer two shipping methods — I picked the cheaper $5 option and it still showed up in about a week. Looks like the price has already gone up by around $20 since I ordered mine, though honestly it still seems pretty reasonable. Even though it technically shipped from China, I didn’t get hit with any import duties. My guess is they bulk-shipped inventory to a US-based 3PL and fulfilled orders domestically from there, since the box itself didn’t have any obvious international shipping labels or documents on it.

I tested it out over the weekend and at this point I only have one gripe, and it's that it is a bit loud. I developed at around 70 RPM as that sound frequency(for my unit) was the least bothersome.

The pour spout/funnel is hinged and the handle above can be adjusted forward/backward. I liked pushing it back up to the unit which felt more secure when pouring.

The included magnet. Also included was their 3rd party Jobo-style cog lid and silicone cover.

It comes with 2 sets of rollers to accommodate all the above listed compatible tanks.

Development results were nice, with no unevenness or streaks.

You unmount the tank to drain it, I assume, then latch it back into the machine to carry on processing?

You can certainly do that, but I believe it was designed to keep the tank attached while you drain. You can elect to keep the tank spinning or not.

Ah, the whole unit is picked up to drain?

Many years ago a colleague designed a processor that would pump out the tank at the end of each step - the tank had a spiral groove in it that ended in a circular groove around the inside end of the tank. A thin tube ran in the end groove and pumped out solution. It was innovative, and worked well in daily use for years but never went commercial.

The lift of my Jobo CPE2 recently desintegrate (plastic threads are gone) and seems impossible to find one. The prices for a CPE2 with lift are close to absurd nowadays (~ €800), so this new rotary processor looks very interesting to me right now...

70 RPM?!

I do prefer the more more calm 15 RPM of my Expert Drums on a Unicolor/Beseler motor bases!

I assume this is not for the 3006/3005 drums...

This is pretty cool. A few adjustments, and a version that takes Expert drums and it’s quite compelling at a small fraction of the price of a ridiculously priced Jobo.

Correct, you pick up the entire unit. Here is their video:

The design you mentioned sounds clever! Do you know why it never went commercial?

Interesting compact design! Although not for the expert tanks (3005), it will be nice for 1500/2500 tanks.

They do offer an alternative to the lift style of processor.

I believe the later model Jobos with lifts had only one setting at 75RPM.

It did seem quite fast to me but the development came out well.

Yes, I saw it and looks good... except for the price 😅

Do you know if you can use the ICE-CREAM EVO with a Jobo cog lid? Or do you need to use the TH cog lid model?

You may want to ask Reflx Lab, but I don't see why you couldn't. They're almost identical and there is no connection being made at the cog or entrance to the tank.

It looks pretty neat. Hopefully it is well made. A lot of new stuff coming out, good to see the interest.

Anyone bought this machine.. It comes with a cog and a rubber 'O' ring
I have a Jobo tank and am wondering just where this ring is fitted as fitting it on the thread side of the cog stops the proper seating of the cog...Just wondering if its foru use with a different make tank??

When I received mine, the rubber o ring was already installed on the cog they provided. I was able to pop their cog onto my 2520 Jobo tank without any problems. There is an extra o ring included if needed.

Thanks for that. I have a 1520 tank and the cog fits tightly on it without the ring. Anyway I have emailed Reflex with the query....at least the manual is in decent English if a little short on the cog intsrs😊

Yours didn't come with the ring installed? Or did you remove it? This lids are supposed to fit very tightly, to prevent leaking...

Ring was just in the packet..anyway the cog in tightly and quite difficult to remove so I suspect the ring was for a different tank (maybe the Chinese knock off Jobo...?)
