In our how-to guide, we looked at how to get started with DIY repairs of electromechanical SLRs, what you need to know, what tools and equipment you need, where the limits of DIY lie, where to find information, how to use it and how to approach troubleshooting

The most important insight I gained while writing these articles was that motivation is almost everything when it comes to DIY success.

All the information we need is available to us. It's up to us to make something of it.

I wish you every success in servicing and repairing your electromechanical SLRs!

Never give up!

āš ļø A word of caution

Please keep in mind that you’ll be using highly flammable solvents for service work, and their fumes are harmful to your health. Soldering also produces fumes that should not be inhaled. Dangerous high voltages can be present when handling electronics, especially in conjunction with electronic flash units and mains. Therefore, familiarize yourself with the safety regulations beforehand and ensure your safety. Depending on the activity, protective gear may be advisable.

Nice series, Andreas. I was wondering where you had gone to and now I see- pulling together your experience for others to use.

Thank you, Dan!

I took a look around the world of social media. When I kept getting accused on Reddit of being a bot or of having an AI write my posts, I gave up on that platform. When I deleted my account, Reddit marked all my posts as spam, making them inaccessible. Now the moderation team there is working on manually restoring them. That’s not what I wanted. But I have a backup of a site that continuously logs Reddit activity.

I find the destructive behavior of a few people there sad, despite a very dedicated team of moderators. There was a lot of interest, and some posts garnered thousands of views within just a few hours. But when your own work comes under suspicion of plagiarism, it no longer makes sense. It also destroys readers’ trust. In any case, there’s huge interest in analog photography there.

The fact that I wrote in a structured manner and apparently made few mistakes made my posts seem suspicious. ā€œThat’s how AI writes,ā€ they said 😌

Of course, I write my posts - also here on PHOTRIO - myself in German, translate them into English using DeepL, and then make some adjustments. That’s what AI is for.

Speaking of which, I’ve been looking into Google’s AI, and I see exciting possibilities for repair. A post on that is coming soon.

Welcome back, Andreas. Although I've been doing much photographing, I've been completely unmotivated to repair cameras šŸ˜†

Why has the motivation faded?

I think of it as an inevitable result of "too many successes": So many working cameras, don't need any more! Pentax 17 is my most recent film camera acquisition, but it may be many years before it needs any sort of servicing.

You could share your experiences with the repairs?
