Hi peeps,

Walther here. Netherlands based wriiter, visual artist and photographer working mainly with Canon (Original EOS M, EOS M50 mark II, Demi, EOS 3000) and Mamiya (M645, C220, 135ee, ZE) camera's. Love to develop my own films, like to dabble in alternative processes and overall your friendly neighbourhood introvert.

Just created this account, have to work on my profile ;-).

Welcome! I’m new here myself but it seems like a pretty friendly place! What kind of alternate processes are you interested in? I’d love to get into wet plate processes someday, but the cost of setting up a mobile darkroom seems prohibitive.

Hi Emily,

I'm mostly dabbling with cyanotype at the moment but I also made some salt-prints. I would love to work with multiple processes like gum arabic, van dyke - brown and such. I just let the proces guide me to where I will be next I guess. This is exactly the way I approach my writing as well as my visual arts. I love all of it, unfortunately do not have time nor the money for it all ;-). So we'll see where it'll lead me.

I’ve dabbled a bit in cyanotype too. I don’t have the space for much of a darkroom so it’s a nice way to be able to at least print something. Learning practical chemistry and applying it to make real things is one of my favorite aspects of the hobby.

The idea of making chemicals from mundane and foraged materials is so fun to me too, and that fits well with cyanotype. Bleaching with wood ash, toning with natural tannins, stuff like that. I haven’t found a good natural toner I like (edit: rather I should say locally foraged) but the bleaching worked great

Toning with tea, coffee and such can sometimes lead to nice results I noticed. Not done that myself yet. I also like natural processes like anthotypes but have not find a way to create a permanent image with it. Actuallly somewhat poetic as everything you can use to create an anthotype is perischable itself...

But yes, finding out how simple chemical processes can create such nice results is very satisfying.

Welcome! I've been working in Alt. for a couple of decades now. Great fun!
Thanks, and decades hmm... /me gets a fork for picking a brain...

I'm not that experienced yet. one day I will be, but probably never out-experience you ;-). And damn... another YT channel I need to follow now...

Thanks!

I do a lot of Alt. on my channel... Carbon transfer, Kallitype, Salt, Ferroblend, the odd Cyanotype, Ferroblend, and Tri-Colour Gum. Loads of fun!

He does - and in real life the results look great.

A donut might be a more effective assist
