May 13 – June 24, 2023 Opening reception: May 13, 2:30–4:30pm

Luhring Augustine is pleased to announce Lee Friedlander Framed by Joel Coen, opening in our Chelsea location on May 13. Curated by the widely acclaimed filmmaker Joel Coen, the exhibition showcases approximately 45 of Friedlander’s photographs that span the range of his 60+ year career, bringing into the equation many lesser-known images. Rather than focusing on a single subject or period, Coen’s selection concentrates on Friedlander’s singular approach to composition and evidences an unexpected affinity between the two artists, both of whose work explores the sly power of images.
As a filmmaker, I liked the idea of creating a sequence that would highlight Lee’s unusual approach to framing—his splitting, splintering, repeating, fracturing, and reassembling elements into new and impossible compositions. – Joel Coen

I think of Lee as one of the few great innovators of photographic syntax, something not easily accomplished, Indeed, I believe he reinvented pictorial space. Somehow I'm reminded of Degas, another great pictoral innovator. I love Friedlander's work. This includes his books "Stems," "The Desert Seen," and his portfolio of nudes.

Looking forward to seeing the exhibition at Fraenkel Gallery. I haven't been there since the 'Signs' exhibition when Friedlander was in attendance.

I've got so many Friedlander books that I'm debating whether to buy 'Framed', but I believe it includes some previously unpublished work so I'll probably bite the bullet.

(@Arthurwg just reminded me that 'The Desert Seen' is one of the few LF books I don't own, I need to track down a copy)

This idea is immensely interesting. Friedlander's art still escapes me, but you just gave me a clue toward another way of approaching it.

+1 . Is/ was so influential to me.

I love his work. He has a unique perspective when it comes to composition. Like a good movie there are hidden gems and something new when you look at Friedlander images multiple times.

the opening at fraenkel was massive... hope the ny gathering continues the appreciation.

I’d love to hear from those who bought the book: Is it previously seen work accompanied by Cohen essays?

I haven't purchased the book yet, but there is a series of installation views on the Fraenkel Gallery web site that shows most of the photos that are included in the book. It appears as if many of the pictures Coen chose have been published previously in other books, but some have not been.

I've got 20+ Friedlander books on my shelf already, but I'm a sucker for his work and will probably buy this new book as well.

Unfortunately, I missed the opening yesterday, but it does look like it was a huge success. Alec Soth even dropped by.

the Chelsea opening was a very different, more enthusiastic group than the Geary one. Many more cameras in NY.
The Luhring Augustine gallery page shows the images included. In an easily seen manner.

@Nitroplait the book is a very good first book, or a grand collection. I think it more as a Movie storyboard for something that is in pre-production. Check the (link) to see if this collection would serve your interests. --r_

Thanks for the link. Most of the images I have in other Friedlander books, but there are some there that are new to me. I guess I'm about to be $60 poorer 🙂
