buyer?

They were aiming for under 130 pounds (the British money kind) according to their website (and before the Kickstarter). Not sure if it will go up or down after the Kickstarter or stay right there.

Neat idea. I would love to back them but I am about tapped out on Kickstarter projects for now. They seem to be coming along faster now, or else I am just getting older. Maybe a bit of both.

I've seen these guys around for a while, good to know that they're finally kickstarting it! And such a small goal, already over 1/3rd of the way there in one day, they'll probably smash it. A good stretch goal would be the Graflok back they mentioned, most definitely.

Counting the travelwide, ferrania, new55, P6 petzval, CL81, plus a few Lomography lenses and probably a lot that I don't know about, that's a lot of combined love for Film around the place, makes me all warm and fuzzy...

I would get one, but then I would need a 4x5 enlarger, plus all the other LF gear.

I'm going to hold out for the 8x10 version.

I'm really happy they are getting this off the ground.

J.

Bad timing for me - my spare cash went to FILM Ferrania. I'll have to hope this gets funded and then buy one when they hit the shops.

Playschool meets Ikea for twice the price of a used Cambo in perfect condition? Or if you want folding, someone on the Large Format forum had a Linhof Tech III with a new bellows for about this price. Why would someone buy one of these????? It makes no sense at all.

The thing is, prices for almost all camera equipment appear substantially lower in the US than, at least, Europe.

I wish US members would remember this before glibly making statements about how easy/cheap it is to buy cameras/chemicals/film/whatever.

The US is only a small part of the world.

There is already another thread on this camera at this forum:

True, and true again. But you're neglecting the duties and VAT that have to be paid on goods imported to, in your case, the UK. And you may not be aware of the cost of shipping goods from the US to anywhere else.

On that last point, visit www.usps.com

A Cambo Legend is some 6.12Kg (13.5lb), a Linhof, around 2.3Kg (5lb). This camera from Intrepid weighs in at a claimed 1.2Kg (2.64lb) - If you are hauling kit any distance on your back, something to consider. The price also puts it par with the Ilford/Titan pinhole so will appeal to the budget end of the market looking for the next step up in LF cameras.

Sure, it is not the world's best looking camera, but like the Bulldog, I'm sure users will be customising theirs - If I purchased one, I think I would consider either a veneer or leather covering to jazz it up a bit.

I would love an 8x10 version. But keep in mind that contact prints of 4x5 are great little gems.

Contact prints can be beautiful too

Ed weston just had a darkroom and a light bulb for his contact prints.

No Dan, you've missed my point on this occasion - it's simply that US members here often seem to assume that the price (and availability) that obtain in the US obtain everywhere, which they simply don't.

I've made your point myself over and over again - although US prices appear very attractive to, e.g., UK residents, and thus make importing from the US superficially attractive, adding shipping, import duty, VAT and brokerage costs to those US prices rapidly makes it not worthwhile.

I remember my first 4x5 camera. I was in my 20s and I got a Cambo rail 4x5 from the now defunct Calumet. I messed up so much film loading the holders and processing the sheet film learning. The camera back in the 80s was $249. I think the Intrepid 4×5 will be the same in today's dollars. It's a bargain. If this catches on, it will be a good thing. The bad side is all those folks snapping up cheap LF lenses. Oh well..

Low prices for lightweight LF cameras are rare anymore. Sure you could get a Cambo monorail for around $150 or so (minus lensboard), but that's an awful lot of weight to trek around with. It's fine if everything is within 10 yards of the car, but it's a major PITA to haul around. I have one and it's a great camera... for studio work. I haven't seen a light weight folding 4x5 for less than around $600 used (your Linhof example notwithstanding).

I think this thing has a lot of promise, especially if the production model has metal parts as they've indicated. $200 (ish)? Yeah, that's a pretty good deal.

Well, I'm not so sure this is a bargain but the price is certainly not over the top for a new 4x5 LF camera. I am more interested in the weight than I am in the price, though of course that is a factor. This camera along with a few Toyo plastic film holders should make a very lightweight, high quality, low priced, film kit. I'm in though I am beginning to get a bit saturated with kickstarter projects.

Seems as if they are pretty close to their goal. It seems they need to get a bit more than 3,000 pounds over the next 28 days to get over the top. I wish them luck.
