Zivity - a rather niche photo/art site - free trial

If you're not familiar with Zivity, you may want to check out my blog post today (2/4/2010). You will probably want to check it out from home ...

The reason I think that it may be of interest to folks here on APUG is that I am planning to put some photos up taken with some TriX and Portra. When I do, I'll put the scans here.

From the brief viewing of the site I've seen so far, it mostly looks like digital imaging...yet still very interesting.

I've put a 30 day free trial email invite address in my blog post, and you won't need a credit card to check it out. I'm actually looking forward to checking it out myself with the trial. So far I've only checked out the free areas.

Do any folks here subscribe or put content on Zivity? If so, what things do you like about the site, and dislike?

I tried Zivity out, but I didn't submit any sets (I do work a lot with content appropriate for that site). Their compensation is upside-down, vastly favoring payment of models over photographers even though the photographers do a lot more work & shoulder a lot more expense.

I friended you on deviantart, some really good stuff there.

I read and looked at the "too staged" b/w and have mixed feelings. While it's technically excellent, it seems like it is trying to mimic the styles of the past (car, clothing, of past decades).

But I also agree with you, that the "masters" staged, but they also created original styles.

In any case, it wasn't right at all for that other site to ban your image or work for that reason, in my opinion.

So if you aren't putting much art. nud. on dev. does dev. art also not pay enough to make it worthwhile?

Well that was sort of the idea for that particular shoot. I wanted to shoot something along the lines of "daughter is grown up too fast, gets busted in daddy's car with her boyfriend" but I felt like setting it back in the 1950's or early 1960's would make it a bit more scandalous, when social values were generally more conservative than they are today.

So in that particular case, I wanted it to look like something that might have been shot decades ago.

Obviously if you've seen the rest of my work there you know that I'm generally not "stuck in the past" and don't even work 100% in film or even B&W for that matter.

So if you aren't putting much art. nud. on dev. does dev. art also not pay enough to make it worthwhile?

Zivity & dA are vastly different sites. dA is useful to me because if someone wants to see my work and they aren't local, I can refer them to that site & they can get a good sampling of some of my work without having to pay any money. With Zivity, almost everyone looking at the work is paying for it, so I really have to insist on getting paid if I put anything there.

OK, I don't have any stuff on dev.art yet, just a free acct., I have stuff on matsumura.smugmug.com and some stuff on flickr, but less organized. I also shoot film and digital, I like film better, and get more "keepers" with film, probably because with digital I am bracketing freely and just clicking more since I don't have to swap out rolls every ~36 frames.

I did two of my Zivity sets completely with film and a third on the way that I did about half of in an old school photo booth with the little strips of pictures that come out after a few minutes.

It's true most of the work there is digital, but there are a few analog photographers on the site.

I generally don't even promote my Flickr presence because it has become a sort of dumping grounds, containing everything from my more elaborate & fully staffed photo shoots to simple snapshots hanging out with friends.

I also shoot film and digital, I like film better, and get more "keepers" with film, probably because with digital I am bracketing freely and just clicking more since I don't have to swap out rolls every ~36 frames.

When it counts, and it's for me, I shoot in film. I had been shooting a mix of digital & film mostly because models & stylists, etc, are sometimes a bit demanding about wanting color and/or digital images if we work on a trade basis.

I've gradually been taking a harder stand. "This is how I work. I use a 40+ year old twin lens camera, and I use B&W medium format film. Your images will all be B&W, and will probably have grain, too. Love it or lump it."

I've been working on something that doesn't yet have a public face but it's all B&W film, all fully staffed fashion shoots. I'll be sure to post a thread when there is enough there available online to show the APUG community.
