Hi everyone!

After some other minor issues with my Bronica ETRS I found another one. After finally testing the camera with a roll at night I realised (after 8 frames) that the shutter wasn't working correctly. I knew this was possible cause of battery drain so I put in a new one. The problem is really weird so try to wrap your head around it.

When using a cable release, the shutter works fine to all shutter speeds. It's when using the shutter release on the body when problems arise. When I use that one, the shutter doesn't activate immediately. So when I press it, the shutter closes but doesn't open again to let the light in It only reacts correctly after I have pushed the film lever a tiny bit forward.

It's a really odd problem and I have no Idea how to solve it. The battery drains in 2 days so there is something wrong with the circuit as well. Should I just sell all the working parts and try to get rid of the body?

I have a AE2, WLF, film back and zenzanon 75mm. Maybe I will get my money back by selling those.

Don't leave the AE2 finder active when you're not using it. It will drain your battery.

Yeah I noticed that the first time but it happened again with my WLF on there. Is it because I don't have a lens cap or is my circuit fucked?

Only if there's a section on troubleshooting the problem.
The troubleshooting section of the shop manual for my old Infiniti G20 enabled me to nail down an EVAP code without involving a tech.

  1. The Bronica ETRS' shutter open is entirely mechanical in its action...so it is a bit of a mystery that shutter release via cable release is OK, while it is not when using the shutter button. My guess is that something in the mechanism has some thickened sludgy lubricant. If the reflex mirror does not swing up fully, the shutter will not open at all, if that is a hint as to why a 'delay' in release of the shutter (or failure to open)
  2. You should be able to pull out the battery, and then the shutter timing electronics are not at all involved, and the shutter should close in 1/500 second by default..
