I'm wondering whether the Zeiss Planar T 50mm f1.4 ZF.2 would be a good functional match for the Nikon F3, meaning it completely supports the Nikon F3. I've only came across two images of people using them in combination. So it's either an undesirable match, or that the budget for the combination is a little steep for a lot of people. Most seem to be using it for digital, does anyone have experience with this lens with 35mm? I like to shoot street photography at night. Typically on cinestill 800t, so would be interested to hear how the lens characteristics face up against say a Nikon 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 AI-s.

Cheers.

Is it any different than the Nikkor 50 1.4? I have the Zeiss but want autofocus, so I'm looking at the 1.4 50mm Nikkor AF. I presume there is no difference.

I like the way the images look much more from the Zeiss. I also have the Nikkor 50 1.4D and use that on my F4, because on that camera I value the AF more than using an MF lens. If you want AF, forget about the Zeiss! I also use the Sigma Art lenses on my F6. Fantastic but huge.

My 'open box' f6 is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I don't have a lot of AF Nikkors. I'll probably start testing with a 28-80 3.5G that cost the same as a f6 focus screen  It is a good lens though.

The 50 1.8G is excellent on the F6. Also cheeeeeep used. I use the 1.4D on the F4 as it needs the aperture ring. F6 does not need that.

But back to the OP, the Zeiss ZF/ZF.2 50 Planar is awesome on the F3.

Okay cool, I think i'll give the Zeiss a try then. Looks promising.

The main question I was asking is whether or not the Zeiss supports everything the f3 has to offer, such as aperture priority. Or are all manual aperture F mount lenses compatible?

Yeah no issues. The mount on the F3 is very basic, just like all Nikon F mounts of the era. Any F mount lens that is AI or AIS is compatible. And I think even non AI ones are if you flip the aperture feeler out of the way. (I think F3 can do this, I'll have to check mine).

I use the F3 with the zf.2 planar quite often. I find it does have a different rendition in terms of color and overall image. I do like it better than the Nikkor AI-S 1.4. This 50mm planar and the 35mm distagon have a 3-dimensional quality to them when shot at f/2 - f/4, it is difficult to describe. I have Ektar 100 samples if you like to see how it renders with that near-grainless film.
