Agreed, I cannot for the life of me understand why Hasselblad decided to have their lenses made by Fuji.....nothing, and I mean nothing beats a CZ lens, I wish they made LF lenses.

I guess, it might be described as a "Cosina-Zeiss" but that's not too shabby, either.

Even more interesting - amidst the digital hype ... It is being handled by Hasselblad here in the USA!!

Actually, the important news IMO is that they are introducing a NEW FILM camera at this time. Someone has to have the idea that film will be around for awhile.

And yeah, for about $3000 (body + lens), it's above many people's budgets.

Con:

• metal shutter (I tolerate it on my G2, since the G2 is motor driven)
• weird old-contax-style metal pads under the body
• 85mm brightlines on no other camera (various 75/80/90 but no 85)
• aluminum frame -- can be bent?
• top speed only 1/2000 (curious for a modern design)
• no obvious talk of dedicated flash
• slightly heavier than bessa

Pro:

• finder has 28mm lines (unlike Bessa R2A .7 -- what's up with that?)
• REALLY WIDE rf base
• 85mm looks much smaller than 90mm summicron

Unknown:

• how easy to use manually?
• price

Q: Who manufactures the ZI lenses?
A: 2 types are manufactured by Carl Zeiss in Oberkochen, 5 types are manufactured by Cosina in Japan.

Q: Why this split-up: 2 types made by Carl Zeiss, 5 by Cosina?
A: To make the ZI-lenses affordable in price and therefore to open them to an expanded public.

The 45mm Planar-G is also made in Japan, and the sharpest normal ever tested at photodo. In fact I think Kyocera makes Zeiss-labelled optics AND Leica-labelled optics in the same plant.

While I've never been thrilled with Japanese made Contax cameras, I have been very happy with the Kyocera CZ optics. Very German-ny characteristics. If a German company has to move it's production out of the country for economic reasons, I'd rather see them go to a country with an established, large, proven photographic industry and workforce. I'd be far less motivated to pay premium bucks for a legendary Germany badge on a camera or lens made in Vanuatu.

I agree - and I believe I have at least one of everything - both Contax SLR and G2 optics.

The 45mm Planar-G is indeed, a real gem.

The Rollei badged Voigtländer was on display at Photokina, but the salesman face was like "Do you really want to see it?" and my face was "No, used surprised to see it at all". I can not remember to actually have seen one in a shop.

Most of the ZM-lenses were dummies, as both the 15 and the 85 were just front lens and otherwise empty. The 15 will be the most expensive at around 2200 Euro. The 85 in the catalogue looks small, actually it has a diametre like the Noctilux and to me looked bigger than the 90/2.0

Further Information from Zeiss

They state that the new ZM lenses have resolved 400lp/mm on Gigabitfilm.

Gigabitfilm has published the quote from a Zeiss letter on their German website, telling that Gigabitfilm has rendered the maximum resolution of their 320lp/mm test chart so well, that they assume even more potential: http://gigabitfilm.de/html/deutsch/aktuelles/aktuelles_main.htm

I guess Zeiss is currently developing a new Resolution Test Chart ;-)

Well, I had a leica with me as I wanted to take some pictures with these lenses (15/85) and was very disappointed. I'm NOT interested in the camera or the 28/35/50 lenses so can not comment on these.

The 15/2.8 is pretty big as well, reminds me of my 15/3.5 which is a Zeiss lens with a Leica R-mount. Think of 72 mm filter size. Focus Range 0.3 m up.

My first relpy...(here anyway) 320lp/mm that is about 3 wavelengths of light, to get much better we will need to shoot using UV.
