I have the above camera with a Novar f 6.3 lens and a Derval shutter. The shutter is quite simple, with two blades. It wasn't working, so I took off the lens and disassembled it partly. It is supposed to be a self-cocking shutter. I have it now so that the shutter fires, but the little lever you depress to take the picture does not return fully. I have to manually pull it up to reset the shutter.

When I started the disassembly, a small ball bearing and a small coil spring fell out. I cannot see where to put them, but the coil spring may play a role that explains my problem above. (Either that, or an assembly worker said "I'll throw these in just to mess around with someone in 87 years' time!")

Any ideas what is going on or where the little spring and ball bearing should go?

I probably have the very same camera and shutter. Mine works but still I'd like to clean it to see if the shutter times will be more like nominal: 1/25, 1/50 and 1/100 which is actually quite stable around 1/30, 1/45 and just a little faster than 1/50! But I've not been able to remove the shutter from the camera because the retaining ring (inside the bellows) sticks. I think it has never been removed. So I'm sorry.

I just opened and cleaned an even simpler shutter on a Voigländer Bessa. That's a Gauthier make too, but with no name. Nominal shutter times are 1/25 and 1/75. It had oil/grease from the focus helical on blades and some other parts. I think I can say that I cleaned it properly but the time for the 1/75 especially is rather unstable. Say 8 out of 10 snaps are fine around 1/75 but then it can do over 1/100 or below 1/50, especially if I turn it upside down or put it in portrait orientation!

I suspect these shutters were not very precise from the start. They're quite simple and low budget. Prontor S** from Gauthier was something rather different.

Put some nail polish remover, aka acetone, around the threads of the shutter to mount ring and let it soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Apply with a cotton swab.

I just finished a #1 Kodak Diomatic in a Vigilant 620. 1/25 measured .042, 1/50 .022, consistent, 1/100 .0134 average.

A lot of lenses/cameras will have a detent ball with a spring under it.
Got a hole that fits the ball?

At the white arrow, ball first, spring on top.

Spring not correctly connected, no lube on the levers, pivots or too much lube causing the levers to stick together rather than slide across one another.

Thanks; I took a close look, and I think the wire spring is properly connected where it is. A little lubrication has fixed the shutter stickiness. I am still not sure exactly how the little coil spring is to be placed.

That spring and ball is used for a click-stop so that one can tell what setting they are on without having to look at the dial. It is either for the speed dial or aperture lever. It will go into a cylinder a few thousandths of an inch/ tenth of a millimeter larger in diameter than the ball with just under 1/2 the diameter of the ball above the edge of the cylinder and a 25% compression of the spring (common usage design in cameras).

This is from my Derval shutter. (I haven't opened it properly yet.) I see no place where that ball/spring would touch the dial.

Well Shutterfinger was correct, and I found where the ball and spring mounted. It was through the other side of the housing, and they serve to provide a click stop for the shutter speeds.

I have one remaining problem. The Time setting does not hold; it acts the same as Bulb. Any suggestions?

There is not enough information in any of the pictures provided to tell how the delay timer should work. Perhaps SlaveSog will open his and post a picture of the mechanism.
If you have had the dial assembly apart and its not reassembled correctly the delay will not work.
