Hey, whatever! If Donald wants to do it and it turns out to be of value then so much the better. People will pay a hundred bucks for a box of film but won't invest a dime on education. Go figure.

Most photographic how-you-do-it manuals I see at Barnes and Nobles are priced in the range of $20-$25. Since they are being printed and yours would be on CD, I think your a bit high.

Interesting...I saw a Weston photograph last week...the darn thing was selling for $5,000 ...does that mean that yours are worth that much?

There's apples and then there are oranges.

I might be interested...

But you might also check how much it would cost to have it printed, and whether the quality you get from places like lulu is good enough.

Donald,

Although I didn't post at the time, believe it or not, I was the first to put in a vote!

I voted for "maybe" and it read 100%. No foolin'!

But I wasn't sure what to say until I saw how the thread developed.

Donald, here's my need. I'm so wanting to learn compositional technique (i.e. beyond the "thirds" and seeking a "center of interest") that I'd love to see what you can produce.

My concern is the CD-book aspect. I already have a couple of books on photo composition and they remain sitting on the table demanding I read them - and I rebel and do not!

I'd like a very visual product - more like a DVD - with good narration. Not something that is just a "book on screen". I'm no more going to read that (and perhaps even less likely to do so since I hate reading text on screen) than a regular book.

I don't know if you want to produce such a work that is mostly visual with narration (and has the DVD capability to easily "replay") - but if you do - I'd probably buy one. Espescially if you marketed it here at a $5 higher price with the difference going to Sean to support APUG.

I agree with others that prefer a book to a CD. I guess I'm old fashioned. I must be, I still shoot film.:D

Hi George,

You have given me another way to approach this and I thank you for that. What I want to present goes quite a bit further than the compositional tools that you mentioned.

I have not seen this material presented in a concise focused way before and I believe that it could be helpful to all who want to produce photographs that have impact and vitality.

I agree that Sean should benefit from this endeavor.

Thanks again.

I think I'm along the lines of many of the above, and George really hits it for me.

Don't know why, but reading text on a screen isn't my cup of tea. But I have all three of Fred Pickers tapes and review them from time to time. I think, hope, I pick something up from them everytime I review them.

If it's a choice between book in print or a CD with text, I'm voting book. But if it is something I can watch, listen to, and observe... I'm really game.

Just a thought.

I'd love to get the information from you - like some of the others, I'm not sure a text CD would be my favorite way. I think a DVD would be a better teaching tool, although it would really need to be well produced. A book might be best.

Thanks to each and everyone of you that took the time to offer your opinions. I now have a direction in which to proceed.

I agree with members who prefer the book printed. If it was on CD, I don't think I would be as enthusiastic about buying it and if I did, then I'd be less inclined to sit in front of a computer to read it. Books are so much nicer. They way you can sit them up in front of you while you eat breakfast, read them lying on your sofa, read them on the toilet...I'd also be more inclined to pay $50 for a book than a CD.

I think that a book on CD -- as a book -- is not likely to sell many copies. The traditional book still has too many advantages for most people. On the other hand, if the CD makes use of technological capabilities, it might then be more valuable. For example, illustrations in books are static; on a CD they can be dynamic.

Many photographic instruction books present a picture and say, 'See, here is how it looks." On CD one might be able to pan the picture left and right and the CD could point out the features which make one composition stronger than another (from the author's perspective.) I once saw a CD (can't recall whether it was instructional or a game, sorry,) which let the "reader" zoom in and out on the scene in the viewfinder. Books can't do things like that.

CDs can also contain videos: since most of communication is visual, explanations using videos are often considered to be more useful than a simple audio recording or print. Of course, print can be referred to over and over again, and annotated, which are useful capabilities.

I probably wouldn't be interested in just a static book on CD.

I too would prefer a book but would buy a CD. If it were about $30 I would buy the CD without hesitation. At $50, I would probably wait awhile and buy it anyway. If you do this, please include many photos with detailed discussion. I find that most books like this are good but never have quite the detail that I would like. Knock yourself out.

I think Weston prints on CD are somewhat less than $5K
