The other day I was hanging out with a good friend of mine (a real estate agent I've shot commercially for) and we decided to go for a walk...I grabbed my AE-1P and off we went...as I was shooting, she asked me if that was the camera I used for work...to which I launched into a long explanation about how for work I use a pair of digital 30Ds, whereas this is an old film camera I shoot just for the fun of it...

After my long-winded explanation about how much fun film stuff is and how different they feel from digitals (she's into cars too, so I told her it's kind of like leaving your '08 Corolla home to drive a much slower, less comfortable, but infinitely more fun and quirky Model T)...she only had one question...

"So how many megapixels is it?"

and one day I will add an AE-1P to the stable, just looking for one locally that isn't 500 dollars. My father used to shoot one when he was my age, with the 50mm 1.8?

Most of the 35MM negs I have scanned when developed are around 16 MP. A few have been over 20.

The Nikon scanner has given me 68Meg negatives, which is way more than I need, however, really incredible image of Mr. Rainer.

Yikes O'Malley! What is wrong with her?

Well, if she asks again, you could say that theoretically, a max of about 24 MPix with a 4,000 ppi home scanner (file about 4,000 by 8,000 pix), and about 96 MPix by paying a lab to scan the film with an 8,000 ppi professional scanner (file about 8,000 by 12,000 pix). In practice, I've never scanned anything to make files that large, nor have I ever had a computer capable of working on such monster files regularly.

35mm 24 Megapixels with home scanner, 96 Megapixels with a professional scanner.
6x6 56 Megapixels with home scanner, 310 Megapixels with a professional scanner.
4x5 320 Megapixels with home scanner, 1.28 Gigapixels with a professional scanner.

I love to have fun with the self-centered know-it-all naive clueless digicam snobs when they ask questions such as that.

I tell them that is uses a high-tech photochemical sensor which renders between 15 and 25 megapixels depending on the exact sensor I am using at the time.

I watch them drool a bit and let them know that the sensor is field-interchangeable and upgradeable by the user.

When I tell them that replacement sensors are sold at any corner drug store, they start to catch on ...

Tim Parkin gave a presentation where he "explain[ed] the large format camera in terms of digital cameras," much like you did, and received a similar type of response!
