I will be receiving the return of my Yashica Mat 124G from Mark Hama tomorrow and will need a lens hood and perhaps an orange filter. The Camera Depot was suggested on this forum as a source. I see that they have a plastic Bay 1 hood and also inexpensive filters. Have any of you had experience with these items from Camera Depot?
I ordered a cheapo cap and a filter from Camera Depot with no problems. You may want to order one filter (instead of a pile of them) at first to make sure the quality is up to par for your needs.
I checked out both of the sources mentioned and did not find a Bay I at CameraFilters, only a Bay I to 49mm adapter. My guess is that a 49mm filter would interfere with the viewing lens, is that correct?
I will give Camera Depot a try for the hood and perhaps a filter.
This was not a controlled experiment, but I started out using one of the Camera Depot filters (yellow) on my Rolleicord. After I replaced it with a Rollei Bay-1 filter that I found on E-bay, I noted a marked improvement in image quality and contrast. Now I just use the Camera Depot filter as a lens cap for the viewing lens.
the bay 1 to 49 mm adapter does not interfere with the viewing lens on my Yashica D TLR. I was able to use a 49 mm orange filter (no hood, mind you) with great results.

No problems at all. I use one when I want to put a filter over the lens. You could even use a polarizer with it if you're careful in exchanging the adaptor between the lenses.
For the hood, I bought a square metal screw-on hood. They're not always easy to find, but that's what you need if you want a better hood than the usual Yashica/Rollei ones. Mind you, I've been using a Yashica hood lately just because it looks cute as a button on my D.
Thanks very much to all of you. I will order the Bay I to 49mm adapter as I have the filters from my view camera outfit. For the hood, I will be on the lookout for a square one, meanwhile will give the plastic one a try from Camera Depot.
Regards,
Merg
That's exactly what I bought for my Yashica 124G. That way I can use my Nikon 52mm filters and top it off with a 52mm screw-in lens hood. If not using filters, then it's just the Bay 1 (Rollei brand) hood that fits my Bay 1 Yashica Mat 124G. Even used, the Bay 1 filters were 2x to 3x the price for 52mm multi-coated filters.
BTW: Anyone looking for a nice Yashica Mat 124G might want to contact Barton Wall in Indiana. He sells on eBay under the name wa2141929 . He's had years experience with Yashica's (and Rollei's too). He checks them out and cleans them, makes sure everything is working OK, etc., and his prices are very affordable. He's very pleasant to do business with. I'll be going back to him when I want another TLR. I bought one from him and it's a real beauty--looks new. Not trying to take anything away from Mark Hama (who is highly regarded), just recommending another source to consider.
