Hi everyone,

I recently bought a Yashica FX-2 on eBay, but the plastic focus screen is completely fogged - it looks like someone tried to clean it with some kind of industrial cleaner at some point. I've been looking online, but I can't find any direct replacement screens . I have a few questions:

1. Can a damaged focus screen be restored? Is it possible to buff out the layer that's deteriorated or is replacement the only option?
2. Can a focus screen from a similar camera be used as a replacement or cut to fit?
3. How should I go about disassembling the camera and removing the focus screen? I've found service manuals for the FX-3 but I haven't been able to find one for the FX-2. Both cameras seem similar mechanically but I'm not sure how close they are.

FX-3 and FX-2 are completely different.

You won't be able to 'buff' out the screen. The top side will be a matt surface and the underside will be a fresnel lens.

You might be able to clean it but you'll have to completely remove it first. I had one recently that someone had managed to get oil onto. Cleaning it with IPA got it 90% back to perfect. It depends on what it is on the screen. I've also washed them with liquid soap to get rid of deposits - rinse with clean water then soak in IPA to remove the water then blow dry.

Thank you both for your replies - I guess it's time to order a set of JIS screwdrivers. The task looks a bit daunting from the parts diagram, but I think I can manage with some patience. If the screen can't be recovered, I suppose I'll try my hand at DIY'ing something. Thanks again!
