Yashica 635 pressure plate issue

Hi folks,

I was hoping someone could help me. Recently I took my Yashica-635 out to shoot with, it still had a roll in it with two shots left but for some reason the film would not advance for me, I ended up having to open the back of it and it turned out there was some kind of corrosion on the pressure plate that had not been there previously. I don't know where this came from or what it is but the roll of film was stuck to it and that's why it wouldn't advance.

I'm not really sure what to do about it. I haven't put a new roll in since and when I try to clean it, it wont come off.

I'm hoping it wont affect future rolls, the camera is perfect otherwise. It's just weird and I've no idea why it happened and it wasn't there when I got the camera. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?

I'd be inclined to try some steel wool(coarse, then fine) or a metal polish on it. Try a magnet to see if it's a non ferrous metal, aluminium or alloy
may clean up better than a steel or tin.

But tape off the interior of the camera, then brush and vacuum THOUROUGHLY until all bits of steelwool and corrosion are removed. If the back is removeable, remove it.
Somehow the backing paper was damp, or contaminated. Did you store or use the camera in a very damp environment?

Thanks so much for the advice. No it was stored in my camera bag in a dry environment so that's why I thought it was so odd. I take particular care with this camera as it's my favourite to use. I'll definitely finish a roll in one go in future!!

Ack, NO steel wool. It's aluminum. It will make a disaster of the plate. Get some Simichrome and polish it properly. If you aren't shooting 35mm film, the pressure plate simply rides on the backing paper.

Agreed, looks like condensation. Was the camera brought inside after being in the cold?

Grand I'll see if I can get some of that. I was using it outdoors. It would have been summertime so not particularly cold but yeah maybe it was the change of temperature of going outdoors to indoors. Just so annoying as it was perfect before!

Works like crocus cloth, excellent for metal polishing.

You know, it might be worth trying to see if the marks come off with a solvent? It might simply be dissolved ink or coating from the backing paper, not a defect in the metal. Run through: alcohol, paint thinner, acetone, naphtha... Keep off of any other surface, wipe semi-dry cloth, not soaking.

Excellent idea!

paint thinner NO, leaves an oily residue.
Lacquer thinner is better but will strip the paint off the camera if it gets on the paint.
Acetone, naphtha OK if used carefully.
