What I find more fascinating than the actual contents of this choice (because I think many other people here on APUG could easily draw up an equally valid list of "10 places to see..." that is completely different from this one), is how the name of our dutch city "Arnhem" (you know: the WOII "Battle of Arnhem") ended up being the name of aboriginal homecountry in Australia??? :D

The history of early European exploration of the Australian region shows that there were many Dutch explorers, or sometimes accidental visitors, long before Captain Cook claimed it for England. There are many names of places and features in Australasia named after or derived from Dutch names. Tasmania is named after Abel Tasman who discovered it in 1642. He named it Van Diemen's Land. He then sailed on to discover New Zealand. Even Australia itself was originally known as New Holland.

I've not seen any on THAT list, but I've put an admirable dent in the list from the "1000 Places To See Before You Die" book. It's a little easier to hit a few in that book because of the size of the target, but they're pretty diverse. The one thing that annoys me about the 1000 Places book is that almost all their lodging recommendations are for the VERY well-heeled.

For my own list:

1. Angkor Wat, Cambodia
2. Segovia, Spain
3. Iguazu Falls, Argentina
4. The eastern Sierra in California
5. Florence, Italy
6. San Francisco, California
7. Bangkok, Thailand
8. The California coastline
9. A transcontinental drive from the US East Coast to the US West Coast
10. Diving in Belize

I found the Brittany location most tempting. And how could South Bend, Indiana possibly be omitted from this list?

I think there are so many amazing things to see in the world you could not possibly put them all on a list.

Now that's a list I can relate to - I've done 6 of them (London, New York, Paris, Hong Kong, Budapest, Berlin) and three of them (Tokyo, Rio, Moscow) have been on my long-term to-do list for a long while

The one place I've been and most wanted to return to from a photographic PoV though is Iceland, so that would have to be on my list. From a more general 'places I just love' point of view I'd need to put San Francisco on there as well!

I'd like to visit: Scotland, Nova Scotia, the US Northwest, California wine country, Savannah, Philadelphia, Appomattox Courthouse, VA, Bangor, ME, and most any place in Vermont.

I'd add Stewart Island NZ (NZ's "3rd Island" at the bottom) 98% nature reserve 275kilometers of walking tracks through jaw dropping untouched prehistoric world. If I recall over 700kilometers of raw and diverse untouched beaches and bays as well. Population of around 400. We plan to head down for a visit next summer. Now that they have broadband we've even considered moving there and living the simple life, who knows I think we'll start with a visit first

Drew, just curious why Bangor? I live fairly close, it's our nearest 'big' city (the word big very much needing to be in quotes). It has a nice river front and small downtown, but I never thought of it as much of a destination. If you're in the area, drop me note, I'd love to show you around.
