Xtol and/or Kodak Fixer on Commercial Flight?

Does anyone know if the major airlines restrict photo-developing chemicals?

I'm thinking about Xtol and Kodak Fixer both are powders...

My father in law had his fixer taken away about a month ago when he was going to Peru.

Not sure what airline.

I haven't had a problem taking Xtol to Europe. I put it in a ziplock bag and then in my check-in luggage. I think it definitely be taken away if you put it in your carry-on luggage.

But who knows? Most of it seems pretty arbritrary to me.

I have a friend who always takes baggies of D-76H with him, packed in his checked bags. So far, he's had no problems and he flies internationally at least once or twice a year.

I'd love to be a fly on the x-ray console when you have to try to explain to the screeners what it is. I guess if it's Xtol you can moisten your finger and taste a little of it to prove its innocuousness.

i was told by airline folks
to leave it in the original unopened, packaging
and in a big ziplok bags, just incase
pressure causes it to explode
( i had castille soap blow up years ago, and it was no fun, smelled nice and minty thought ) ...

but things might have changed in a year's time

why don't you and call the faa or airline you are flying ?
better to call and find out from the source than
get advice from people who mean well, but may not have the latest info ...

I recently took Rodinal and Xtol on flights within Europe in my checked in luggage with no problems.

I wouldn't try the hand luggage route though, it'd just be too difficult trying to explain to the paranoid security staff what it is and proving it!

These are the same people who made me remove my field camera that I was hand carrying and x-ray'd it three times because it was old-fashioned/never seen one before/was large and wooden/was strange looking/didn't understand why i used one etc, etc.

Jeez, i dread to think how i would have explained any developer to these people!

I regularly fly with Pyrocat HD and Ilford Hypam/Rapid fixer, just make sure it's not in your hand luggage.

I've flown with D76 raw chemicals in my check in baggage. I mentioned it to the airport staff when checking in, and they told me not to worry.

I think it´s basically two things to remember:

1) You are not supposed to bring more then 100 ml in your hand-lug

2) Raw chemicals can be mistaken as drugs.

But as already said, most things pass through in the checked-in lug. Even weapons do.
