Hey if I have a friend who recently put some fresh batteries into the her camera and it was dead after a bit. Not sure if you should always turn it off even if the lens cap is on

Several possibilities here. First, not all new batteries are "fresh"; I've found some sets that were dead virtually upon installation. Second, I believe the XG-1 has an On/Off switch; I'm not sure how much power it draws when left on, and I'd be surprised if leaving it on for a day or two, but if it were not switched off that could have done it (lens cap on or off would not matter). Finally, I've read reports recently of XG-1's starting to fail. These were not expensive cameras when they were made, and the oldest examples are closing in on 4 decades old.

The XG-1 has an on /off switch but it powers down automatically after so many seconds, they have a touch sensitive shutter release to activate the meter and shutter. I've left them on for years...
