Xenar 240/4.5

Local store has a Schneider Xenar 240/4.5 (single-coated) in an Ilex (iirc) self-cocking shutter.
He's asking $600 initially for it because he's not certain of its value.
It won't cover 8x10 at infinity, but could if one focuses quite close.
I suggested $250 to $300.
(Glass is perfect & shutter fires accurately.)
What are your thoughts on the value of such a lens?

I think you're a lot closer than he is and to make the high end it needs to be "minty".

Isn't that a Tele-Xenar?

Richard, there don't seem to be any f/4.5 Tele-Xenars for large format.

Collin, I'd be very suspicious of the lens. Schneider is a German company, usually (always?) sold Xenars in Compur or Compound shutters, depending on size. Compur smaller, Compound larger. Ain't no Ilex self-cocking shutters that conform fully to the Compur standard or that match non-conforming Compounds. The lens you're offered smells like a remount. If, that is, you remember correctly.

The f/4.5 Xenar is just another f/4.5 Tessar, isn't better than the others. If you want a lens in that class, look around, You should find examples from CZJ, Wollensak, Ilex, and many other makers.

I found the price odd because he has a very nice nikkor-w 180/5.6 for a mere $200 and a 210 on a nicer Cambo in case for $450.
I am going to see if I can get him to part with the 210 separately.

Probably worth more like $100-$150 range, particularly as it's not in a German shutter. That's based on what I've paid for excellent Tessar and Xenar lenses of various focal lengths and age, (some bought from the US where prices are much lower than Europe).

A 240mm Xenar would be a great lens for a 7x5 (or Whole plate) camera, although I use a slightly wider un-coated 1919 CZJ 210mm f4,5 Tessar in a Compound #3 on my Senecas which I paid £50 ($75) for which I think is a fair price.
