XA4 impending issue?

I finally got my hands on an XA4—a very clean-looking copy from a reputable store with an eBay presence.

I decided to use the self timer for a shot, only to find that it doesn't work. I remember reading something John Hermansson (of Camtech—an Olympus expert) said about non-working XA self timers and an oily magnet.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows if this points to impending failure requiring service or replacement. If it does, even though I want to be optimistic and keep it, I think I should probably return it and try for another copy.

Anyone?

Do you have new SR44 batteries in there? That's the first thing to come to mind. If you do, well, then some sort of service is likely necessary.

Battery check indicates that they are ok, but I'll throw in a fresh set and see if that helps. Thanks for the idea.

Love the xa4, but it is not a robust machine.
