I have played with the lever etc and nothing helps. Every time I go to take a photo the self timer activates. Very frustrating to say the least. The batteries are practically new. Any suggestions on fixing this issue that doesn't include sending it away for repair?

Are you handy Erik?

It's easy access to the switch and contacts. It's right under the lever itself.
I'm not sure what you're going to find in there, there are a couple of switch contacts printed on a circuit board and the sw. contacts on the bottom of the lever. I don't remember how the circuit works though.
Three screws(4?) & the cover pops off.
Other things that also pop off are the front cover and the detent roller. The front cover will just lift off. The roller is about 3-4mm long & 2-3mm in diameter and under the cover. When you reassemble the camera. put the bottom cover back on, the roller detent in position & "wrap" the front cover in place starting at the bottom/front of the camera it'll just snap into place. If you do this in the "closed" position you should have no trouble with aligning the switch.
You also need to be aware that the fr. cover also closes the main switch when it is slid open, so you need to make sure it engages properly after you've assembled it. If it's not turning the camera on or, letting it turn off when it's closed, you need to pop the cover off & reinstall it.
