Hi, I'm located in Portland, Maine. I'm looking to pick up a 2nd hand Phototherm SSK-8R, not interested in the smaller capacity versions. Preferably with as many accessories as available. I'm wanting to do a fair amount of volume with it!

Let me know if you're selling, and name your price!

2 just sold on ebay not long ago @ $500/ea ( I was going to get one or both but missed out, unfortunately.)

Find out who bought those and maybe you can talk them out of one.

It should be possible to convert a SSK-4 into an SSK-8 with a bit of effort, from what I have seen. You would need the correct chip from Phototherm. Other than the chip and level sensors, and the larger tank, there's not much difference.

Nice, that's super cheap. I'd be a little wary of the condition in those cases. I will need to get up and running fairly quickly so having a Project might be more than I'm willing to deal with. I'm certainly willing to pay more for a ready to go unit.

Have you asked Phototherm if they have any refurbished machines, or any customers that are trying to sell one?

Are they still in production? I attempted to use the email on the website and it bounced back to me...
I believe so. There is a very recent thread here on APUG talking about buying a refurbished one and how appreciative the purchaser was.
Here it is: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)
And here is another: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)
Clearly, they should put me on a retainer .
And no, I don't have one, I just want one.

They are still in production as far as I know, I have gotten parts from them not too long ago. (I have an SSK-4). The $500 ones on ebay were cheap, and agreed quality was unknown, however they seemed complete and at that price would have been worth taking a chance on one or both of them.

Yeah that email must have gone through, because I just got a response. They indicated that they do not sell used or refurbished units. I wonder if people just sent in units to BE refurbed or something. The search continues!

Related question... If i'm running C41 5 days a week, is it advisable to run control strips? I am not sure if that's necessary for non-replenished developer systems...

Hi, control strips are generally considered to be mainly for replenished systems, because there are more things to go wrong. Say, for example, a replenisher pump fails so that you are not getting developer replenisher. A control strip would show weaker development, and you'd start troubleshooting and probably find the bad pump right away. Obviously you don't need to worry about this sort of thing if you don't replenish.

But a second use of control strips is to prove that your process is functionally "within spec." I'm thinking you plan to do some commercial processing, so maybe you want to know if it is, one way or another. A lot of people here would say no need - just use the correct time and temperature, you'll be fine. But what if your temperature readings go on the fritz - say you're 2 degrees off; how would you ever find out (or do you even care)? Or perhaps you got a shipment of chemicals that are sub-par, or are somehow damaged. How would you find out? If you have control strips, you test process one, read it, and you know if you're ok or not. Of course there are other ways to check on this. You could shoot a test roll, then split half off to a lab that you somehow know is in spec; you process the other half yourself and compare.

So I'd say it largely depends on how finicky you are about things, and how reliable all of your systems, including chemical suppliers, are. If the end result doesn't matter much then you don't have to be so finicky. But if you're trying to do higher end work then it probably behooves you to know how your processing stands. Imagine being in the position of having a high-end wedding shooter come to you saying, "My last wedding, I split the film between you and XYZ Lab - your film is not as "punchy," what's going on?" It would be nice if you could look at your records and say, "hmmm... my test strips were right on the money that day, must be the other guy who is at fault."

Sorry there's no real easy answer to this.

No I think that's helpful! It just means I should probably be using control strips, but maybe not every day. Might be a good idea just after mixing a fresh batch of developer and once more through it's run...

I process a fair bit of c41 and don't bother with control strips, but it's only for my own use, not for others. I use the dev one-shot but recycle the bleach. These are great units but depending on volume you are planning it may be worth looking for something bigger, like a Wing Lynch or something. Normally I can run about 4 rolls/sheets of any type in about 30-40 minutes, but add in washing the parts and drying them for another run and you are probably at a little less than an hour per run for C41. not hugely fast throughput from a commercial standpoint (or maybe I am just slow! ;-)
