I am looking for an Olympus OM-1n for my son who is interested in photography. His two older brothers already have OM-1ns which we purchased from sellers in this community. We have a number of lenses that can be shared between the boys, so I guess this is our standard starter camera.

Would prefer one kitted with the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 lens and with the circuits already adapted to a modern battery. But, we’d also be happy to find one in need of some TLC that we could have overhauled ourselves.

Also, if you have an alternative camera that you think would be great for a new photographer with with smaller hands looking to begin the art of photography with a fully manual camera, let us know! I use a Nikon FM2N and would consider any of the FM series so he could borrow my lenses.

The OM-1 is a really nice camera and you being so familiar with it will help. I am still using the one I got second hand in 1979 (!) . . . Having said that I find the Pentax ME Super another wonderful camera and it may answer your question re smaller hands. The ME Super must be one of the smallest SLR's around. It also has one of the "smallest" sounds of the shutter, quite remarkable. Easy to use in automatic mode, same with manual mode. The 50/2 is also small and makes for a very balanced combination. As good a lens as the Zuiko 50mm. I make large b/w prints from these cameras (up to 20X24) and the negatives are just fine.

I have an OM-1 with the 50mm f/1.8 lens that’s in good working condition. It hasn’t been converted for modern batteries, I just use hearing aid batteries with an O-ring. PM me if you’re interested and I will send photos of it.
