Does anyone still use Kodak wratten filters in their work ?. I was just given 20 to 40 Kodak wratten filters everything from red, green and blue to cyan, magenta and yellow. I don't use filters myself but would it worth it to list them here in the classifieds or on ebay ?.

They make sense, when one:

-) needs unusal filters not available in glass as the CC range
-) wants to use one size of filter for lenses of different size
-) needs a great variety and does not want to schlepp/store much glass
-) needs to locate filters behind the lens

Yes I do. These are the filters I use the most.

I have a bunch of various yellow and orange gelantin filters - got them for cheap. I keep them in my notepack for occasional use. Mostly I go with my B&W Schneider Kreuznach screw-in filters ...

I don't use the color compensating filters very much but the sharp cut (like red green blue) and the neutral grays in high and low densities are useful. As well as the #90 for making black and white viewing frames.

There are some filters that you can only get as Wratten gels. The #44 and #44A cyan filters leap to mind. They are just the ticket for achieving an orthochromatic look from panchromatic films. I have a couple of these with me whenever I'm working in the field.

Of the tri-color separation filters, #25 red, #58 green and # 47 blue, the last two are difficult to find in glass. I use both the #58 and #47 when needed in the darkroom for split-grade printing. I can also get almost a full grade more contrast from VC papers with the #47 blue filter than I can with full magenta filtration from my color head, so I use that when really needed.

I'm sure others have Wratten gels they find indispensable as well; hopefully they will add to the thread.

Best,

Doremus
