Hi, all, I found this place in my search for alternate processing web sites. I think i shall be here a lot.

I worked with film for about 50 years and 3 years ago I got a digital camera. I had lost all my darkroom equipment and cameras, sooo. I had to do something and I live in a small apartment. Well, I started getting tired of the digi about 2 years ago.I had joined camera club here and they think they don't have to learn anything about photography as long as they have photoshop. I am teaching a series of basic photography classes for club members and boy I have had full classes every time. However I ran into a stumbling block when I told them they couldn't use those expensive point and shooters. I made them use the cameras on straight manual, manual focus, manual exposure. Last week one of the women who had given me the most grief walked up and thanked me for making her do manual. She now understands why I do that. It felt good.

No, I didn't digress, I am just relating how I feel about photography and cameras. Well I began slowly accumulating darkroom equipment and cameras. I wenta little crazy with cameras as I now have about 40 of them including a few MFs. My favorite is a Zeiss Nettar which takes 6X6 negs. I got a little range finder to put on the top and a hand held meter, a luna-pro, which I've had since 73. neat little rig. I also got a Kiev 88, the Hassy ripoff and very eager to start using it.

I got interested in alternate processes after reading an article and decided that is the way I want to go. I got a book on making digital negatives and really having trouble understanding the PS part of it but I shall get there. Any way, thats the abridged form of the book. LOL

Welcome Michael,

You will find plenty of friends and lots of great information here.
Most everyone on APUG has varying levels of GAS (gear aquisition syndrome)
so you should feel right at home.

If you are interested in digital negative making, you will find a ton of info at www.hybridphoto.com a sister site to apug covering hybrid processes.

If you are interested in making enlarged negatives optically, information can be found here on the process.

Welcome from Utah,

best

Michael,

Hello from Iraq! I taught at USC (photography summer workshops) a couple of years and loved it there -- I thought it was hot until I came to Iraq!

Anyway, welcome aboard and rest assured you'll find out all you can possibly want to know here, you'll meet a bunch of cool people, and we all look forward to your comments and sharing your experiences with the rest of us!

Hi Michael,

Welcome from various abodes depending on when. Right now from sunny Tucson - but, alas, soon back to dark NYC.

This is a great place - you'll like it here.

Hello Michael,

Welcome. I too did digital after years of darkroom work. I found digital interesting but after a long time with photoshop I found myself using drawing programs to create computer art. I had found photography "hollow". I went back to BW and resumed the satisfaction of making something of "value" to me. Digital has its place but for a work of a lifetime it will be the traditional route.

My favorite is a Zeiss Nettar which takes 6X6 negs. I got a little range finder to put on the top and a hand held meter

I have the same setup and love it. If I were teaching photography I would have each student purchase a Nettar on ebay. It used to be de riguer for photo teachers to purchase a few grocery bags of Diana's and hand them out to the students, but that just led to a new form of arty-farty. I think a straight camera that yeilds excellent results from excellent technique is a better choice. Agfa makes a similar camera, the Solinette, but the bellows are normally shot, though there is a man who rebuilds them.
