Well, I have broken a tiny plastic piece of the back door in my Nikon f601. It doesn't close anymore. I like my f801s more than f601 but shutter button. You know, f601 has the thread for shutter release cable. F801s hasn't. I take a pic...
But both cameras are very similar. This take me to think if would be possible changing shutter. I would love to have that feature in the f801s. I don't care breaking 601 but 801... yes.
There is a standard cable release adapter for the Nikon N8008S/F801s that screws into the electronic release socket. It's called the Nikon Terminal Release MR-3. And I like it for some things but eventually got one of Nikon's electric cable releases and the wireless remote set both of which, IMHO, are superior.

I have broken my f601. I won't break my f801s but you can see how it works. May be all cameras works the same. I'm talking about shutter: half press and full press. There are 2 parallel connectors. Half shutter reach only the first level for af, etc.
I think you are right. I've changed my mind about transplanting. Maybe both cameras are similar at some points and it would be possible, but definitely not easy.
