Five weeks into recovery from Covid & took my second excursion out to make some exposures. I'm finding Weston had it right:

"Anything more than 500 yards from the car just isn't photogenic."

Sorry if post is in the wrong place, off topic or whatever but I'm too tired find the right place. Got some good negatives though.

Good to get back out!

Covid knocked me back hard...but after a couple weeks recovery, I did some solo backpacking up Redwood Creek (low elevation) with the 4x5...moved slow, but moved. Those photons trapped in my film holders seem to get awfully heavy on the hike out! Got the results of that trip, plus two other trips this year, and in 2012 and 2024, up on the walls.

Definitely more than 500 yards from the car (but 500 yards is still considered too far by some -- over a quarter mile!) It is a steep 1.75 mile trail (beautiful) down to Redwood Creek, then hike up the creek (no trail) for a couple miles surrounded by 150 to 350 foot tall redwoods and such. My June hike (a couple weeks before Covid) was a dicey adventure due to high water, but I was also hiking through groves of old-growth rhododendrons in full bloom. Hard to beat.

That's a swell photo.

I got out of my car (van) today to take a photo but was sorely disappointed because I had just a 50mm and not something wider. Of course, because I had the 50, I didn't have to walk as far. (and, of course, I had no 4x5 with me - not that I'd have a wide angle for that, either....)

I've been developing film since 1969 without any mistakes...until post covid today.
As wash was finishing I grabbed a bottle of stock Kodak Photo-flo to mix up a final rinse - at least I thought so. I
didn't realize Photo-flo is in a round bottle and HC-110 is in a square bottle. Lesson for all, 1 to 17 HC-110 does
not work well as final rinse! (Doesn't seem to do any harm either after re-wash.)

I've been plagued with a respiratory issue for the last year and it finally came to a head a couple of weeks ago, I got to spend a week wadded up in a hospital bed with tubes and wires sticking out of my body fighting for my life. Not covid, allergies overwhelmed my system and I was drowning in my own body fluids. I can finally get out of the house and breathe. Recovering slowly but I can see a future. I can't wait to get my 8x10 out again.

Yes, by all means get out and about before winter hits. It's unfortunate that you caught it, but it's great that you got through it, and are apparently on the mend now.

Nice gallery of your nature hike, but most of the prints look like they're 4x5 contacts. I'm sure somebody could loan you an enlarger.

At this point I don't go far from my SUV with my 4X5s, not even my Crown, for sheet film it's a 21/4 by 3 1/4 Bushman or baby speed with just a few film holders, lighter than my Mamiya Universal. Good luck with your recovery, hopefully you will be back to your old self in short order.

Having had COVID twice: Thank GOD that you have survived! It takes time to get your wind back. After nearly three years (yes, I was one of the early ones, before it was identified. Antibody tests confirmed) I still have some breathing issues, mainly at night. I can't lay horizontal to sleep, upper body has to be propped up.

But! I'm still vertical, sucking air so it's good.

Pre COVID, I've gone walkabout with the RB67. But, the CC400 is on a short leash to be sure. Waiting on a great grand child so that I can steal a stroller when they get a bit larger. I'm too cheap to go to the Goodwill type stores .

I finally was able to take my 8x10 out on Sunday. I didn't have to walk very far from the auto to get my shots (parked next to a covered bridge). Now I just have to get down to the darkroom and process the film. Life is finally getting back to normal.

My neighbors and I managed to get lucky and avoid COVID by taking almost hospital like precautions. The easiest one, and the one that was most enjoyable, was always meeting up outside in the yard and keeping a respectable distance apart. I'm 71, have the usual health issues that old folks have, and can't be taking any chances. It wasn't fun, but so far so good.

The important thing for all of us to remember is that COVID hasn't gone anywhere. It's still everywhere, and only being kept at bay through vaccinations and booster shots. As it and other viruses continue to change and mutate, I still keep to meeting outside if possible for all manner of things. It only takes one little slip up to remove me from the scene.

We have three threats this winter: COVID, RSV and the flu. Strap in, wear a mask, wash hands, keep your distance, ... and use replenished XTOL.
