womens only workshop in the New England area

Hi all,

there has been some interest in a "Womens only workshop in the New England area". I am willing to fly up to the area and lead the workshop if there are enough willing participants. This could be a darkroom workshop or a shooting workshop. My question is are there enough women that want to attend somethng like this? PM me or post on this thread and lets talk about it.

As a woman in New England, I'd totally go for it! Either way, shooting or darkroom, or a bit of both!

I'd be interested in this, especially the darkroom workshop, but probably couldn't swing it until late spring early summer because of work and family things going on right now.

OK, I gotta ask, why "women only"?

I'm in Minnesota, so don't have a vested interest one way or another in this New England workshop. And I can understand how it can be intiminating for someone to be in a group that knows a lot more than they do or - even worse - THINKS they know a lot more than they do.

So I see how, in certain traditionally male dominated fields, it can be intiminating for a woman. But surely photography is not such an area. And the women who participate on this site certainly seem as knowledgeable as the men who participate.

I'm not arguing against it and I'm not trying to initiate a debate. I just am curious as to why it was proposed and seems to have attracted interest. :confused:

The mere fact that you had to ask the question explains why there is interest among the gals. All power to them.

It was proposed to me so I thought I would run with it. I got no problems doing a mixed workshop either. I would be more than happy to do a workshop in your area also mqb74. There are still some women that are not as outgoing as they need be also.

I would attend a women only workshop if there were one in the Dallas area... there's a dynamic in mixed male/female groups that impacts my ability to learn. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's not there when I'm learning with a group of other women. Each person is different. There are many women out there who will disagree with me. Just my $0.02. BTW I'm the only female engineer on a team with 17 men. Not only that, but they're all also republicans and love digital photography.

A "shooting" workshop can be held here at the VPC (there would have to be some kind of "donation" to the Center) or a darkroom workshop might happen at Whitey's school depending on scheduling. Actually, scheduling will play a part in having it here at the VPC also.
Keep both venues in mind when planning this event.

Eric, very well said......

Being fortunate enough to go out and work on a project with Lee, I can tell you it would be well worth the time spent. We have had lots of fun, the BS level runs off the scale sometimes and most of all we learn from each other, but when questions come up we frequently differ to Lee for help.

So why not have all three workshops....one for the ladies, one for the gents and one for both.

For those wondering why a ladies only, look no futher than the Santa Fe workshops, they have been doing these for a while now.

Good luck with it Lee...hope you have so many you have to do 2 or three worshops to fit everyone in.

If someone announced a workshop from which women would be barred outright, I'm sure he would be accused of discrimination. Personally, I think a person should be able to offer a workshop for either men or women if he cares to, but why the double standard?

there is NO double standard. I am thinking of offering this women only workshop as one of many. Hopefully, there will be more workshops in the not too distant future of all kinds and for all people.

Lee, let me know when the next one you have in the Ft. Worth area. New England is too far for me as much as I would love to see New England. I don't care if it is all women or mixed, although all women sounds like fun. Perhaps that is why it was suggested.

it seemed to me, the woman only started out as a tongue in check comment as he had just finished a 1 on 1 workshop with someone who happened to be a woman.

i don't know why i should be surprised that it has gotten twisted about.
